Throughout the offseason, Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker have been frequently mentioned as potential trade candidates from the Houston Astros. Several teams seeking versatile infielder options with offensive capabilities have shown interest in acquiring either player. However, recent insights suggest a lack of imminent trades involving them as the offseason progresses.
MLB Network insider Jon Morosi, speaking on Monday’s episode of Hot Stove, provided a clearer picture on the status of these two players. Morosi noted the Astros’ desire to introduce more left-handed hitters to their lineup; currently, they lean heavily right-handed, which could pose challenges especially if Yordan Alvarez is sidelined for any period.
“I think both players are still available, but I’ve been checking on this in recent days, it does not appear that a trade is imminent at this hour, at least, for either Isaac Paredes or Christian Walker. The general idea is that the Astros would like to get more left-handed, they are really right-handed. You look up, and down the lineup, if there’s a situation where Yordan Alvarez is out of the lineup for a particular amount of time, they become even more right-handed and perhaps susceptible to quality right-handed pitching,” Morosi said.
Morosi further emphasized Paredes’ flexibility and contributions, highlighting his capacity to handle multiple infield positions, including an unusual role at first base—a skill that has affected Walker’s standing on the roster.
“This guy, though, Isaac Paredes, you look at what he’s been able to do. 20 homers, someone that can move around the diamond, some second base and third base, and first base as well. Actually, ironically, Paredes’ ability to play first base has made Walker somewhat expendable. So, again, the potential trade fit is there, because (Astros general manager) Dana Brown would like to get a little more left-handed. But as we speak today, it appears more than likely that both Paredes and Walker will be in camp with the Houston Astros to begin the Grapefruit League,” he added.
Growing Doubts About a Paredes Trade to the Red Sox
Among the teams linked most intensively to Isaac Paredes during this offseason campaign is the Boston Red Sox. Despite what seems on paper to be a mutually beneficial matchup—the Red Sox seeking an infielder and the Astros aiming to bolster their outfield—frustrations are mounting over stalled progress in the negotiations.
Jared Carrabis, a respected analyst and content creator, expressed skepticism about the likelihood of this deal happening anytime soon during a recent episode of the Section 10 podcast. He pointed out the indecisive stance of the Astros’ general manager and the slow pace of talks as the spring training start date looms.

“I think the Astros GM over there was very non-committal about Isaac Paredes being put on the table. Like he was very wishy-washy about it. He didn’t say, ‘We’re not trading the player.’ He was just like, ‘Yep, we’re going into camp, and we expect him to be there.’ So, I think he can still be had, but I think where there’s cause for concern is the fact that it’s f****** February 4th, and nothing has gotten close,” Carrabis said (33:22).
Carrabis further assessed the dynamic between the two teams, identifying the Red Sox as potentially dragging their feet despite clear positional needs and surpluses.
“The Red Sox want the player, the Astros need an outfielder, the Red Sox have too many outfielders, so it’s a perfect fit. But it’s not going anywhere. Why isn’t it going anywhere? It’s probably because of the Red Sox. The Red Sox are probably the team that’s not playing ball here. If there’s no progress being made, and pitchers and catchers report (for spring training) in less than a week now, it’s a little hard to have faith that it’s going to happen,” he added.
Isaac Paredes’ 2025 Performance and Team Value
Isaac Paredes delivered a solid 2025 campaign, batting .254 with 20 home runs and driving in 53 runs, earning him his second All-Star nod. His offensive output, combined with defensive versatility—including the ability to play second base, third base, and first base—makes him a valuable asset. This adaptability has directly influenced Christian Walker’s status on the roster, as Paredes’ ability to cover first base has lessened the team’s reliance on Walker.
Implications of the Trade Deadlock and What Lies Ahead
The hesitation surrounding trades involving Paredes and Walker reflects deeper uncertainties within the Astros’ roster-building strategy as they prepare for the upcoming season. Though acquiring more left-handed hitters remains a stated goal for Astros general manager Dana Brown, the lack of forward momentum with potential trade partners—especially the Red Sox—complicates these plans.
With spring training rapidly approaching and pitchers and catchers soon to report, the likelihood that Paredes and Walker will begin the season with the Astros is increasing. This could mean that the team will re-evaluate trade discussions later in the offseason or look for different avenues to balance their lineup’s handedness and offensive depth. As this situation unfolds, the Astros’ decisions regarding these players will significantly affect their roster flexibility and approach to the 2026 campaign.
