Emmanuel Clase Spring Training Ban Keeps Guardians Shaken

CLEVELAND, OhioMajor League Baseball has not announced when the status of Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz will be resolved but has confirmed that both players are prohibited from participating in spring training this year. The team’s pitchers and catchers are set to report Tuesday in Goodyear, Arizona, though Clase and Ortiz will be excluded as they remain on the restricted list amid ongoing legal and disciplinary issues.

Legal Troubles and Contract Uncertainty Affect Team’s Preparations

Indicted last November by federal prosecutors for gambling on games, Clase and Ortiz face significant legal challenges, including a May 4 trial in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Both players could face up to 65 years in prison if convicted, and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred might impose lifetime bans. Although they were on a non-disciplinary leave from July through last season, the Guardians were obligated to pay their salaries during that period under an agreement between MLB and the Players Association.

Clase still has $6.4 million remaining on his guaranteed contract, but it is unclear if the Guardians will be required to fulfill that payment while the ban endures. Ortiz, meanwhile, remains unsigned for the 2026 season, adding to the team’s uncertainty as spring training approaches.

Wider Impact on Guardians’ Roster and Organizational Concerns

The absence of these key pitchers has heightened tensions within the Guardians organization, already facing challenges such as the search for a defensive coordinator and pending contract decisions, including that of outfielder Steven Kwan. Additionally, the team must consider the development of prospects like Chase DeLauter during this turbulent period. With Clase and Ortiz sidelined amid ongoing investigations and legal proceedings, the team’s preparation and on-field competitiveness face significant disruption.
