The outfield is especially crowded with players like Roman Anthony, Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, and Masataka Yoshida, who also competes for time in the designated hitter spot. Additionally, first base looks to be firmly controlled by Willson Contreras and Triston Casas when healthy. Campbell’s earlier defensive struggles at second base and the presence of other infield prospects such as Marcelo Mayer and Caleb Durbin reduce his chances of playing there regularly.
Contract and Possible Path Forward
Having already signed an extension with the Red Sox, the organization appears invested in finding a way to utilize Campbell on the field. However, given the depth of talent in both the infield and outfield, breaking into the lineup will require exceptional performance, especially as an outfielder. The likelihood of Campbell earning a starting outfield role at the beginning of the season seems low without unforeseen injuries or a return to his early-season form from last year.
