A native of Clarkton, Missouri, Blaylock made his Major League Baseball debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1959 after an extensive nine-season tenure in their farm system, where he earned 97 wins. During that year, he played in 26 games for the Cardinals and was also utilized in five appearances as a pinch-runner.
Tenure with the New York Yankees and Career Statistics
On July 26, 1959, Blaylock was waived by the Cardinals and subsequently acquired by the Yankees. He pitched in 15 games for New York, logging 25 2/3 innings with an earned run average (ERA) of 3.51. Throughout his Major League career, Blaylock appeared in 41 games, starting 13 of them, and worked 125 2/3 innings with a 4.80 ERA, compiling a 4-6 win-loss record.
Later Playing Career and Transition to Coaching
After the 1959 season, Blaylock returned to the minor leagues and also competed in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, achieving a 15-13 record over 35 games. Following his playing days, he transitioned into coaching, managing minor league teams affiliated with the Kansas City Royals. He eventually became the Royals’ pitching coach, serving from 1984 through 1987 and playing a role in guiding the team to the 1985 World Series championship.
