The Toronto Blue Jays revealed that Anthony Santander will likely be sidelined for five to six months after undergoing left labral surgery on February 11. This injury leaves the team without a key hitter they had anticipated to contribute significantly in place of Bo Bichette’s production for the upcoming 2026 MLB season.
Since joining the Blue Jays in 2025, Santana’s tenure has been frequently interrupted by injuries. Throughout the 2025 season, he struggled with a persistent left shoulder injury that never fully healed, hampering his performance. He managed to return in time for the postseason but was forced out of the American League Championship Series due to a back injury, complicating his recovery prospects moving forward.
Blue Jays Weigh Replacement Options Amid Santander’s Absence
Following Santander’s surgery, Sportnet analyst Ben Nicholson-Smith discussed the outlook for the Blue Jays’ attempts to find a suitable replacement, either through free agency or trades, as the 2026 season approaches. Nicholson-Smith pointed out that the timing and approach vary greatly between the trade market and free agency.
The trade market is where you can afford to be much more patient,
Nicholson-Smith said during a February 11 appearance on Sportsnet 590 The FAN.
In free agency, you’ve got to move now. This is the time because players are trying to find homes, and we’re seeing that with deals across the league… I don’t know that that hitter is out there in free agency, is my point.

It might actually come down to a trade at some point during spring. That might mean going through the next six weeks with a fair amount of uncertainty as the Jays explore those different options, which they always do. This could be the year to do it because Leo Jimenez, you want to try to do better than that.
Blue Jays Unlikely to Execute Major Trade Before Season
Nicholson-Smith also noted that despite the urgency to win a World Series, Toronto is not expected to engage in significant trade deals comparable to the Seattle Mariners‘ acquisition of Brendan Donovan from the St. Louis Cardinals. Such aggressive moves, Nicholson-Smith suggests, might be beyond the Blue Jays’ current reach.
If you were going to try to add to this team, I actually think probably a second baseman who can play a little third would be great,
Nicholson-Smith said.
I mean, Brendan Donovan would have been really good. The Mariners ended up giving a lot up to get Brendan Donovan.
I don’t think the Blue Jays probably could have topped that offer, even if they had known this on Dec. 1. If they had gone into the offseason knowing that Santander was going to miss time and tried to push for Brendan Donovan, I still think Seattle’s offer would have been better.
Update on Shane Bieber’s Health as Season Approaches
Alongside Santander, veteran pitcher Shane Bieber is also in recovery as the Blue Jays prepare for the season. Manager John Schneider provided the latest status update on Bieber during early February, emphasizing a conservative approach toward the pitcher’s return after Tommy John surgery.
Schneider said,
“[Bieber’s] here, he’s feeling good and he’s playing catch out to 90 feet. We’re being cautious by saying not [pitching] at the beginning of the year and we’ll work through it with Shane. We’ll go week-to-week with him and see how it’s going.”
No procedures or anything in the offseason, it’s just a high-level pitcher coming off Tommy John and pitching longer than he probably expected in some really high-stress outings. We’re just taking a really, really cautious approach with him.
Challenges Ahead for the Blue Jays in 2026
With both Anthony Santander and Shane Bieber facing uncertain returns, the Blue Jays confront a challenging 2026 season. Losing Santander, a player counted on to fill offensive gaps, puts pressure on the team to explore trades or free-agent signings under tight timelines and cautious conditions. At the same time, managing Bieber’s recovery means the pitching rotation must adapt without rushing his progress.
This cautious but uncertain rebuilding phase suggests the Blue Jays may endure some instability early in the season while seeking opportunities to strengthen their roster. The team’s approach in the coming weeks will be crucial in defining their competitiveness as they aim to contend for a World Series title.
