Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Anthony Santander is scheduled for left labral surgery this Wednesday, performed by Dr. Keith Meister, as the team prepares for the upcoming 2026 season. Due to persistent shoulder problems, Santander is expected to be sidelined for five to six months, extending his absence after missing most of the 2025 season with similar issues.
Santander had previously battled a shoulder subluxation last year but continued to suffer from inflammation that forced him out halfway through the American League Championship Series. Blue Jays manager John Schneider expressed cautious optimism about Santander’s return later this season, while acknowledging the significant recovery time required.
“I think this has been a couple of weeks, and talking to him, and this was a possibility, kind of planning for that now, if surgery was the outcome,” Schneider said. “He would do everything he could to kind of go into that surgery as healthy as he could to hope speed up that recovery up.”
“But…it’s always tricky with surgeries. The hope is for him to definitely be back as soon as he can to help us kind of down the stretch in the second half.”
Schneider noted that Santander had worked through rest and rehabilitation over the offseason, but the shoulder issues recurred in January. Although the timing is unfortunate, the team believes surgery offers the best chance for Santander to fully recover and perform at peak condition upon his return.
Additional Injury Challenges Facing the Blue Jays Roster
The Blue Jays are also dealing with significant absences involving other key players. Shane Bieber is currently experiencing forearm fatigue, potentially sidelining him for an extended period, while Bowden Francis recently had UCL reconstruction surgery and is expected to miss the entire 2026 season.
These setbacks will increase the workload for pitchers Trey Yesavage, Dylan Cease, Kevin Gausman, and Cody Ponce, who will need to take on a greater role this season. The team is focused on securing timely returns from both Bieber and Santander, who was slated to play a key part in the lineup following the departure of Bo Bichette to the Mets.
Impact on Blue Jays’ 2026 Season and Future Outlook
Anthony Santander’s required surgery and extended recovery period represent a significant concern for the Blue Jays as they head into 2026. His absence on the field, combined with injuries to Bieber and Francis, intensifies pressure on the roster to perform without several crucial contributors. Successfully managing these injuries will be vital for the team’s competitiveness and playoff aspirations.
Looking ahead, the Blue Jays hope that Santander will return in optimal health to support the team during the critical second half of the season. Meanwhile, careful monitoring and rehabilitation of the injured players will determine how the roster evolves throughout the coming months.
