Paul Goldschmidt Praises Ben Rice Ahead of 2026 Yankees Season

As the New York Yankees prepare for the 2026 MLB season, first baseman Ben Rice aims to elevate his performance in his third year with the team in the Bronx. Having posted a .255 batting average with 26 home runs and 65 RBIs last season, Rice is determined to contribute significantly as the Yankees chase another American League East title and a chance to return to the World Series following their 2025 ALDS exit to the Toronto Blue Jays. Veteran teammate Paul Goldschmidt recently expressed high regard for Rice’s growth and potential.

Paul Goldschmidt Highlights Rice’s Work Ethic and Growth

Paul Goldschmidt, a seasoned player and seven-time All-Star with the Yankees, praised Rice’s development ahead of the new season. On February 11, Goldschmidt told SNY,

“He’s a great player, a very smart player, and very hard-working,”

adding,

“I saw him just improve a lot last year. The more experience he gets, he’s just going to keep improving over there, keep working, make adjustments, and just has the potential to be a really great player.”

This endorsement emphasizes the confidence the team’s veteran has in Rice’s ability to continue rising as the No. 1 first baseman for New York.

Rice’s challenge will be to translate his promising stats from last season into an All-Star caliber campaign, while benefitting from Goldschmidt’s experience and presence both on and off the field.

Goldschmidt’s Role Won’t Reduce Rice’s Playing Time

The Yankees solidified their roster by signing Paul Goldschmidt to a one-year deal as announced on February 6, ensuring the team retains a valuable veteran weapon. This move adds depth behind Rice and provides flexibility for the lineup. Goldschmidt appeared in 146 games last season, hitting .274 with a .731 OPS, demonstrating particular effectiveness against left-handed pitchers with a .981 OPS compared to a .619 OPS against right-handed pitching. This platoon advantage allows the Yankees to utilize both players strategically.

According to MLB insider Jon Morosi on February 9, Rice remains the dominant first baseman, especially when facing right-handed pitchers. Morosi stated on MLB Network,

“I would say that Ben Rice still enters spring as the predominant first baseman, especially against right‑handed pitching.”

He added,

“I would say against pretty much every lefty that you face, if you’re the New York Yankees, Goldy is in the lineup somewhere. Now, of course, that could also be at DH depending on what [Giancarlo] Stanton’s role is on a particular day, and [Aaron] Judge as well.”

Goldschmidt, therefore, complements Rice by providing significant offensive contributions against lefties and offering lineup flexibility as the Yankees manage their roster against various pitching matchups.

Importance of Goldschmidt’s Bat in a Competitive AL East

Morosi also emphasized the strategic necessity of having Goldschmidt’s bat in the Yankees’ lineup given the tough competition within the American League East. Facing pitchers like Boston Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet frequently calls for strong left-handed hitters, which Goldschmidt provides.

“You like what the Yankees have put together overall. And if you think about the American League East, you’ll have to deal with Garrett Crochet whenever you would expect in most series against the Boston Red Sox. So very valuable indeed to have Goldy’s bat in there against every lefty and some righties as well,”

Morosi explained.

With the division’s heightened competitiveness, Goldschmidt’s presence strengthens New York’s lineup options, potentially impacting the team’s success in winning series crucial to postseason positioning.

Looking Ahead to a Defining Season for Rice and the Yankees

As the Yankees gear up for 2026, Ben Rice’s continued progress is pivotal to the team’s ambitions of securing the AL East crown and making a deep playoff run. With Paul Goldschmidt providing mentorship and valuable platoon flexibility, Rice has both the support and the opportunity to elevate his performance to new heights. The combined efforts of these players, alongside key figures like Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge, will play a critical role in shaping New York’s pursuit of another World Series appearance.
