Evan Phillips Returns to Dodgers on $6.5M Deal After Surgery

Relief pitcher Evan Phillips is set to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers after agreeing to a one-year contract worth $6.5 million this Wednesday. The 31-year-old right-hander, a key bullpen contributor for the Dodgers since 2021, became a free agent when the team non-tendered him last November following his recovery from Tommy John surgery performed in June.

Reactions and Availability for the Upcoming Season

Two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell expressed excitement about Phillips’ return through an Instagram story post that read, “Hello 🥶.” Despite the boost to the Dodgers’ bullpen depth, Phillips is not expected to be ready at the start of the 2026 season due to ongoing rehab. The team anticipates his availability for the second half of the season.

Phillips’ Performance and Roster Changes

Since joining the Dodgers, Phillips has maintained a strong 2.22 ERA with 45 saves over 201 appearances. To make room on the 40-man roster for Phillips, the Dodgers designated catcher Ben Rortvedt for assignment. His previous season was limited to only seven games because of a right rotator cuff strain and elbow inflammation, adding to uncertainty about his immediate impact.

Dodgers’ Approach During Phillips’ Rehabilitation

After non-tendering Phillips post-2025, the Dodgers engaged in discussions with him and his agent regarding a potential return once his recovery progressed. Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations, highlighted their patient stance during the rehabilitation process, emphasizing support for Phillips’ decision timeline.

“We had a number of back and forth discussions with Evan and his agent,” Friedman said via text. “It is challenging with him coming off surgery, so he is going to take some time and look to sign after he throws off the mound when his rehab allows.”

“Evan has been a big part of our past success and we will continue the conversation about bringing him back. We respect that he is taking this time to decide what is best for him and his family.”

Looking Forward: Impact and Expectations for the Dodgers

The Dodgers’ decision to bring Phillips back signals confidence in his ability to contribute once healthy, strengthening their bullpen as they tackle the 2026 National League West race. His experience and previous performance add valuable depth, although timing his return will be critical. With the team already clearing space on the roster, fans and management alike remain hopeful that Phillips can regain full form and help the Dodgers maintain their competitive edge.
