The New York Mets have high hopes for the 2026 MLB season, with much riding on the health of right-handed pitcher Kodai Senga. The pitcher himself has emphasized his primary objective for the upcoming year: staying healthy throughout the entire season.
Senga’s Struggles with Injuries and Performance Fluctuations
Since his promising MLB debut in 2023, when he recorded a 12-7 record with a 2.98 ERA and earned an All-Star selection, Senga has faced multiple health setbacks. Now 33 years old, he has only managed to pitch in 23 games through 118.2 innings over the following seasons, compiling an 8-6 record with a 3.03 ERA.
These past two years have been frustrating and tough mentally. At some points, maybe I started to lose confidence,
said Senga, via an interpreter.
In this world, it’s either you do it, or you don’t. And I’m here to do it. That’s all there is.
Senga’s 2024 season was delayed by a shoulder injury that kept him out until July. His struggles with health persisted into 2025, when a hamstring problem placed him on the 15-day injured list, halting a strong start where he held a 1.47 ERA through 13 outings. Upon returning, his performance declined, leading to a demotion to the Triple-A level.
Contract and Future Outlook
Senga remains a significant asset for the Mets, having signed a five-year, $75 million deal in 2022. As the team looks ahead to 2026, his ability to maintain his health will likely have a major impact on the Mets’ pitching strength and overall season success.
