Erick Fedde Returns to White Sox, Eyes Stellar 2024 Comeback

Erick Fedde is back with the Chicago White Sox after signing a one-year, $1.5 million contract, as confirmed last Tuesday. The pitcher, who previously spent part of the 2024 season with the Sox, returned to Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona, where he reunited with catcher Korey Lee during a bullpen session, signaling his readiness to contribute to the team’s 2026 campaign. Fedde’s return comes after a challenging period marked by multiple trades and efforts to regain his peak performance.

Spring Training Marked by Familiar Faces and Tactical Adjustments

During his first days back, Fedde connected with teammates and staff, including senior pitching adviser Brian Bannister. Bannister helped Fedde review mechanical elements of his delivery, aiming to restore the pitcher’s command and effectiveness. Fedde reflected on the session:

“He showed me a video right away and was like, ‘Hey do you remember doing this?’ I was like, ‘OK, yeah.’ He said, ‘Let’s get back to this.’ It was a little mechanical thing. Just a few things to work on in catch every day and try to, brick by brick, get back to being good.”

This process reminded Fedde of previous good times with the Sox, bringing back memories of young players developing alongside established teammates. He noted,

“It just reminds me of times when things were good. In ’24 we weren’t the best team in the world but had some guys who were just breaking into the league. Seeing their excitement and seeing guys like (pitcher Jonathan) Cannon and Lee — threw to Lee today — it was like old times. But it was just cool to be back and love being in Arizona.”

Fedde’s Journey Through Multiple Teams and Overseas Success

Following a strong 2024 that included a 7-4 record and a 3.11 ERA over 21 starts, Fedde was traded midseason in a complex three-team deal. Over the 2025 season, he pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals, Atlanta Braves, and Milwaukee Brewers but struggled with a combined 4-13 record and a 5.49 ERA in 32 appearances. Despite recent difficulties, Fedde’s eight years of Major League experience, bolstered by a successful 2023 season in South Korea’s KBO League where he earned MVP honors, position him as a player with valuable skills and leadership potential.

Team Leadership and Mentorship Roles Highlighted by Management and Players

White Sox manager Will Venable emphasized Fedde’s veteran presence as an important asset both on and off the field, saying,

“Certainly, a guy that has been there and performed well in this league. One, to have his ability on our team, and which we can depend on, is great.”

Venable also pointed out Fedde’s role as a mentor to younger players, adding,

“But also, as an example to these young guys about how to go about their business and build the things on a daily basis that can lead to long-term success is huge for our group too.”

Young pitcher Jonathan Cannon, who played alongside Fedde in 2024, described Fedde as

“a guy we all kind of looked up to a little bit and asked for a lot of advice.”

Embracing this leadership role, Fedde reflected,

“It’s crazy, you blink and you go from the young guy to the old guy really quick. But I’m going to try to just do what the older guys did for me when I was a National and trained behind some Hall of Fame-quality guys with (Max) Scherzer, (Stephen) Strasburg, (Patrick) Corbin. It’s just about teaching the right way to go about things, what it looks like to be a professional.”

Fedde Embraces Competition and Preparation for 2026 Rotation Battle

As spring training unfolds, Fedde is ready to compete for a spot in the White Sox starting rotation, welcoming the pressure to perform. He stated,

“Competition is healthy. It’s not something I haven’t done before. But as long as it brings the best out of all of us, that’s important. In the end of the day, we are going to put the best players out there and try to win a bunch of ballgames.”

Fedde’s focus remains on regaining consistency by refining his pitching mechanics, particularly improving his seam shift capabilities, which are crucial for controlling the ball’s movement.

“For seam shift guys, if the ball isn’t spinning perfect, it makes it really tough. Just getting me back to where the ball is coming out of my hand clean and get the seams moving left and right,”

Fedde explained, underscoring his commitment to working closely with coaches throughout the offseason and spring training.

Outlook for Fedde’s Role With the Chicago White Sox in 2026

Erick Fedde’s return to the White Sox signals a renewed effort to secure his position as a reliable starting pitcher while continuing to provide mentorship to younger teammates. With a history of overcoming challenges and a strong desire to improve, his role is expected to be pivotal in the team’s hopes to build a competitive roster in 2026. Fedde’s experience across multiple teams and leagues, combined with the support of White Sox staff and peers, suggests he could be a key contributor as the organization aims to end previous struggles and pursue a successful season.
