On a recent episode of The Phillies Show, Ruben Amaro Jr., the former general manager of the Phillies, mentioned Nick Castellanos as a potential trade candidate for the Toronto Blue Jays. Amaro Jr. highlighted the Blue Jays’ immediate need for offense following an injury to their designated hitter Anthony Santander, who is expected to miss several months due to shoulder surgery.
“You know what? Santander just got thrown on the IL for the Toronto Blue Jays. They might need a DH, a bat. I mean, he’s out for what, five or six months? You never know,” Amaro Jr. said (12:49).
Given the Blue Jays’ loss of a key slugger, Castellanos could be a viable option to fill the offensive void for the reigning American League champions during Santander’s absence.
Additional Possible Trade Destinations for Castellanos Mentioned
Earlier in January, Amaro Jr. outlined other teams that might consider acquiring Nick Castellanos, such as the Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies, and Tampa Bay Rays. “There’s some teams that might have to put dollars onto their payroll. The Pittsburgh Pirates, Tampa Bay Rays, maybe even the Colorado Rockies,” Amaro Jr. said (23:33).
“Their payrolls are so minimal that they’re starting to get kinda hand slapped from the MLB PA. They may have to take on some money associated with a player like Castellanos,” he added.
These teams are facing pressure from the Major League Baseball Players Association to raise payroll levels, which might make them open to deals involving players like Castellanos to meet those financial expectations.
