WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Houston Astros closer Josh Hader resumed playing catch on Friday following a period of rest prompted by biceps tendinitis that developed during off-season bullpen sessions. The six-time All-Star left-hander had missed the end of last season due to a shoulder capsule strain, delaying his full recovery heading into spring training.
Manager Expresses Optimism About Hader’s Progress
Astros manager Joe Espada revealed Hader had stopped throwing earlier this year after experiencing soreness during several bullpen outings, but resumed activity upon arriving in Florida for camp. Espada noted,
“Hopefully we could get him going here. He’s trending in the right direction,”
adding,
“We have plenty of time to get him back on the field since we know how important he is to our team.”
Strong Track Record Before Injury
Hader, 31, finished the previous season with a 6-2 record, 28 saves, and a 2.05 ERA across 48 appearances. His most recent outing was a two-inning performance against the New York Yankees on August 8, preceding Houston’s unexpected miss of the playoffs for the first time in nine years.
Careful Approach to Rehab Emphasized
Espada said Hader currently feels positive about his condition and that the team is adopting a cautious approach.
“We are just taking our time and make sure that we do this right,”
the manager said. Hader had estimated being a few weeks behind schedule due to tendinitis but dismissed the issue as a minor setback, clarifying that the shoulder was not affected after he returned to throwing. He also explained the discomfort stemmed from throwing a changeup during his fourth bullpen session of the off-season.
General Manager Confirms Encouraging Signs
General manager Dana Brown acknowledged Hader’s improved status, stating,
“Based on what he’s telling us, he feels pretty good. So that’s a good thing.”
Brown added that the Astros plan to gradually increase Hader’s workload to fully prepare him for the season.
Implications for Astros’ Upcoming Campaign
The cautious yet hopeful progress of Josh Hader’s injury recovery is crucial for Houston as they look to rebound from missing the playoffs last year. With ample time remaining before the season begins, the Astros are prioritizing his health to ensure he can contribute effectively once back on the mound.
