Nathaniel Lowe has embarked on a new chapter by signing a non-roster contract with the Cincinnati Reds ahead of the 2026 season. The veteran first baseman will vie for a position on the Reds’ major league roster during spring training, aiming to reestablish himself after recent struggles.
Performance History and Recent Team Changes
Before joining the Reds, Lowe delivered consistent offensive production with the Texas Rangers, recording at least a 2.0 fWAR and an OPS surpassing .760 in four consecutive seasons. Following a mid-season trade to the Washington Nationals, however, he encountered difficulties and was eventually released in August, finishing with a .665 OPS.
Boston, requiring a first baseman, signed Lowe after his release. With the Red Sox, he improved his numbers significantly, batting .280/.370/.420 in 119 plate appearances, a notable rebound that included earning a Gold Glove in 2023. Despite this, Boston pursued Willson Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals for first base, leading Lowe to accept a minor league deal with the Reds, an organization currently featuring a surplus of infield talent.

Although Lowe is not known for consistent power, reaching 20 home runs just once in his seven MLB seasons, Cincinnati’s hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park could enhance his offensive output if given regular playing time.
