Roman Anthony Joins Team USA: A Dream Come True for WBC

Roman Anthony, the Boston Red Sox right fielder, has been named to the United States roster for the upcoming World Baseball Classic (WBC), marking a significant milestone early in his career. This announcement came as an injury replacement for Corbin Carroll, giving the young player a chance to represent his country on one of baseball’s biggest international stages.

Anthony’s journey to this moment began three years ago when, fresh out of the draft, he attended the WBC championship game between Team USA and Japan in Miami as a spectator. At that time, the possibility of wearing the red, white, and blue was still a distant hope, but now it has become a tangible reality.

From Fan to Participant: A Dream Realized

Reflecting on his experience as a fan at the last WBC, Anthony said,

“The last WBC was when I was fresh out of the draft, went with a few guys that I was drafted with and watched one of the games in Miami after a spring training day, just watching it as a fan, it’s unbelievable.”

This firsthand exposure to the competition fueled his motivation to reach the highest levels of the sport.

Now, stepping onto the field as a member of Team USA, Anthony recognizes the honor and responsibility this opportunity carries. He commented,

“Just getting to take the field with some of the guys who have been a part of that and have past experience but the biggest thing is just getting the opportunity to represent this country and go out there and give it our best.”

Rapid Progression in a Short MLB Career

Despite only playing 71 games in the major leagues since his rookie season, Anthony has advanced quickly, earning the chance to compete alongside seasoned veterans. His inclusion as an injury replacement shows the confidence the team places in his abilities and potential impact during the tournament.

Regarding the moment he received the call to join Team USA, Anthony shared,

“It’s something you dream of as a kid to be able to get that phone call. It was exciting on my end to be able to just get that call. Just an unbelievable opportunity. So to even be considered in something like that with the group of guys that are there, it’s going to be a blessing for sure that I’m looking forward to.”

Learning From Veterans and Embracing Teamwork

Joining a roster filled with accomplished players offers Anthony an invaluable environment to learn and grow. He described,

“It’s amazing. Just getting to be around those guys. I think getting that opportunity to be around the game’s best and be around so many veteran guys who have done it for such a long time. It’ll be a great learning experience for me, but at the same time understanding that there’s a goal that we have to try and come out on top.”

He also expressed enthusiasm about contributing to the team, stating,

“I’m super stoked, regardless of where I play or whatever it is. Like this is an amazing opportunity to just be around these guys and be a good teammate and represent this country.”

Reuniting With a Former Teammate

Anthony will have the chance to share the field with Alex Bregman, a former Boston Red Sox teammate. The connection between the two players remains strong, as Bregman reached out to check on Anthony after his selection. Reflecting on this, Anthony said,

“He reached out um when it happened and we talked over the phone and he wanted to see where I was at and just kind of like check in. Obviously it’ll be a great opportunity to take the field with him again.”

Gaining Valuable Experience Before the Big Stage

Having missed postseason play last October due to an oblique injury, Anthony views the WBC as a critical step to gaining exposure in high-pressure situations. He noted the significance of playing alongside and against some of the sport’s top talents.

“I grew up watching these guys on TV and to play against a good bit of them last year was awesome. But just to play with them and to take the field with them and to gain so much knowledge from everyone’s background of the game. So many vets on this team and so many legends. So, just getting to take the field with them and to experience that for a few weeks will be awesome.”

Looking Ahead to the World Baseball Classic

Roman Anthony’s inclusion on Team USA at such an early stage in his career is a testament to his rapid development and potential. His experience at the World Baseball Classic will not only elevate his skills but also deepen his understanding of competitive baseball on the international stage. This opportunity to learn from veterans and play alongside a talented roster positions Anthony as a promising figure for the future of American baseball.

As the tournament approaches, Anthony and Team USA will be focused on delivering their best performance, aiming to capture another WBC title and uphold the pride of the country they represent.
