As the Atlanta Braves prepare for the 2026 MLB season, they face challenges after missing the playoffs last year. The team recently received disappointing news with starting pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach expected to miss much of the season’s first half due to an elbow injury. This development has prompted discussions about whether the Braves will seek external pitching reinforcements.
Insights on Possible Lucas Giolito Acquisition
Gabriel Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the current stance regarding the possibility of the Braves pursuing free-agent starter Lucas Giolito. Although there have been rumors connecting Giolito to Atlanta, Burns clarified,
“There have been reports linking the Braves to free-agent starter Lucas Giolito, but any connection between the parties has been overstated, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has learned. The Braves haven’t been involved in Giolito’s market,”
indicating that no significant pursuit is underway.
Giolito, who played last season with the Boston Red Sox, would bring veteran experience to the Braves’ rotation. Despite this, the Braves’ front office, led by general manager Alex Anthopoulos, appears confident in the existing pitching roster.
Burns further explained,
“…the team remains comfortable with its internal options and hasn’t felt pressed to make a significant addition before opening day, which is March 27,”
suggesting the team’s priority is to rely on its current players rather than move aggressively in free agency or trades.
Looking Ahead to the 2026 Season
On a positive note, star outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. is reportedly fully healthy after recovering from multiple injuries, including ACL tears. The Braves are also hoping for improved performances from players like Ozzie Albies and Austin Riley, who had disappointing campaigns in 2025 that contributed to the team’s playoff absence for the first time since 2017.
The Braves have already commenced their spring training preparation with the season opener scheduled for March 27. How the pitching staff develops and whether the team will reconsider external additions remain key factors to monitor as the season approaches.
