In the next few months, Boston Red Sox utility player Ceddanne Rafaela is looking forward to two major milestones: joining a World Baseball Classic roster alongside a longtime idol and achieving top honors as a defensive player. The 23-year-old from Curaçao has already secured a spot on Team Netherlands’ WBC roster, where he will have the chance to play alongside Red Sox legend Xander Bogaerts, an aspiration Rafaela has held for years.
Connection Between Two Caribbean Baseball Stars
Although Ceddanne Rafaela and Xander Bogaerts never shared time together on the Red Sox’s Major League roster, they are tied by a deep bond rooted in their shared heritage from the ABC Islands in the Caribbean. Bogaerts hails from Aruba, and Rafaela comes from nearby Curaçao. Both islands are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and have produced a small but notable list of MLB players—23 in total including the two stars.
Bogaerts made his MLB debut in 2013 as the fifth Aruban-born player and quickly earned recognition, winning two World Series titles, five Silver Slugger awards, and making four All-Star appearances during his decade with Boston. He remains the Red Sox’s all-time leader in games played at shortstop with 1,246 appearances.

Rafaela, who began as a middle infielder in the Red Sox minor leagues, grew up admiring Bogaerts. Despite debuting for Boston in the summer of 2023, by that time Bogaerts had moved on to the San Diego Padres, making Rafaela one of only 17 players from Curaçao to reach the majors. Rafaela has since displayed versatility, playing multiple positions and earning his first career start at shortstop, the same position Bogaerts held for the Red Sox.
Admiration and Mentorship Across Generations
Rafaela has often spoken about the influence Bogaerts has had on him both on and off the field. When Bogaerts returned to Fenway Park as a visiting player in 2024, Rafaela expressed his admiration:
“I’ve always looked up to the player he is, the human he is,”
Rafaela told the Herald.
“I think he’s one person always. Doesn’t matter how he’s doing on the field, I think you always see him being nice to the people, he’s being one of the best teammates, that’s what I’ve heard. So I think those type of things are the things I really appreciate about him.”
Although the two were unable to be teammates during the 2023 World Baseball Classic as hoped, they have kept in close contact, communicating in Papiamento, their shared native language. Bogaerts continues to follow Rafaela’s performances with pride, often commenting on highlights of his former fan turned peer.
Obviously he’s a mentor for a lot of kids back home in Curacao and Aruba,
Rafaela said.
And I’m close to him, and to learn from him, I’m very excited.
Defensive Prowess Earns Rafaela Prestigious Gold Glove Award
2024 proved to be a breakout year for Rafaela’s defensive abilities, especially as a utility player. He distinguished himself as the only player in Major League Baseball’s Modern Era to log at least 60 games at both shortstop and center field in the same season, showcasing exceptional versatility and athleticism. Playing exclusively in center field in 2025, Rafaela’s skill earned him his first career Gold Glove, an award recognizing the best defenders at each position.
Building on this success, Rafaela aims to improve his performance and garner even higher acknowledgments moving forward. The next step in his defensive ambitions is capturing the Platinum Glove, which honors the single best defender in each league.
Obviously sometimes you hope to do more,
Rafaela shared.
But you have to be grateful for what the man above gave you, and I’m really grateful for what I’ve been doing in my career.
I aim for more,
he added.
That’s the goal, to win another (Gold Glove) and then to win the Platinum this year.
Impact and Outlook for Rafaela’s Career
Ceddanne Rafaela’s rise reflects both his individual talent and the growing representation of Caribbean players from the Netherlands’ territories in Major League Baseball. His bond with Xander Bogaerts underlines how mentorship and shared culture can inspire the next generation of players to keep pushing boundaries. Rafaela’s defensive versatility and ambition to elevate his game add excitement to his future with the Red Sox and Team Netherlands.
As the upcoming season unfolds, fans will watch to see if Rafaela can replicate or surpass last year’s gold-standard defensive strides. His quest for continued excellence also adds an element of hope and intensity to the broader story of international influence in America’s pastime.
