Guardians GM: Players ‘Pissed’ by Emmanuel Clase Pitch Scandal

The Cleveland Guardians’ bullpen suffered a major blow when their star closer Emmanuel Clase was implicated in a pitch-rigging scandal in late July 2025. Alongside starting pitcher Luis Ortiz, Clase was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave as Major League Baseball launched an investigation into suspicious betting activities. The scandal sent shockwaves through the team, deeply affecting the players and the overall organization.

Team Culture Key to Overcoming the Crisis, Says GM

Guardians General Manager Mike Chernoff highlighted how the team’s strong culture helped them withstand the scandal’s impact and still rally to win the AL Central division. He emphasized that the organization focuses on bringing in not only talented players but also individuals who strengthen the team’s character. According to Chernoff, this cultural foundation proved crucial during this turbulent period.

“That hit us hard,” Chernoff remarked.

“Colt, like you said, we have to separate ourselves. We can’t do it with the economics. We have to do it in other ways. And culture is such a huge part of what we do. Our scouts do a phenomenal job of understanding and learning the makeup of each player. And we try to bring in great people, not just great players, and we do the same thing with coaches and scouts and whoever that we’re bringing into the organization, so we can separate ourselves in culture. And when something like that happens, man, it’s a knock to the whole organization — obviously, what it does on the field, but also what it does off the field.”

Players’ Reactions Marked by Anger and Disbelief

Chernoff was candid about the strong emotions inside the clubhouse after the scandal broke.

“Our guys were pissed. They were not happy. I’m sure you’ve talked to some of our players. Still, every time I read anything about it, I’m cringing. It makes my stomach unsettled just to see some of the stuff that’s been written about. And yet, our guys never gave up.”

The team’s disappointment was palpable, but their resilience became a defining feature of the season.

Guardians’ Remarkable Comeback Amid Upheaval

Despite losing two key pitchers for much of the latter half of 2025, the Guardians staged an impressive turnaround. After a difficult start with a 40-48 record, Cleveland went 48-26 during the remainder of the campaign. This surge allowed them to catch up to the Detroit Tigers and secure the AL Central title, defying expectations set at the All-Star break.

Looking ahead to the 2026 season, Cleveland holds the third-best odds to claim the division crown, trailing only the Tigers and the Kansas City Royals, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

Investigation Looms Over the Team’s Future

The details of the MLB investigation into Clase and Ortiz’s alleged pitch manipulation remain under scrutiny, casting a shadow over the Guardians’ recent successes. The scandal has tested the integrity of the team and raised questions about the impact on player trust and fan support. How the organization continues to navigate this crisis will be critical for maintaining its competitive edge and reputation in the league.
