Mariners Dodged Disaster with Jarred Kelenic Deal 5 Years Ago

On February 5, 2021, Seattle Mariners President and CEO Kevin Mather participated in a Zoom event with the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club that initially flew under the radar. The recorded video was posted to YouTube on February 19, drawing virtually no attention until the next day when Eric Hess, a lifelong Mariners fan, watched it and shared excerpts on Twitter and Reddit, igniting widespread backlash. The clip featured Mather making several controversial remarks, including comments about translating needs for Hisashi Iwakuma and criticisms of Julio Rodriguez’s English skills.

The most notable revelation concerned Jarred Kelenic, then the Mariners’ top prospect and ranked fourth in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline. According to Mather, the team had offered Kelenic a six-year contract with option years worth substantial financial incentives, but Kelenic declined, choosing to “bet on himself.”

Super interesting video here with Kevin Mather, says Kelenic was offered a 6 year deal plus option years worth “substantial money” and he turned the #Mariners down, instead “betting on himself” https://t.co/EbdBCB9qo4 — Eric Hess (@SeattleSunDvl) February 21, 2021

Kelenic’s Decision to Decline the Mariners’ Offer

Corey Brock of The Athletic detailed Mather’s statement during the meeting, quoting him as saying,

We offered (Kelenic) a long-term deal, six-year deal for substantial money with options to go farther. After pondering it for several days and talking to the union, he’s turned us down and in his words, he’s going to bet on himself.

The fallout was swift, with Mather resigning on February 22 amidst the controversy.

Following the resignation, negative attention continued, fueled by reports from Bob Nightengale of USA Today that Kelenic and his representatives believed rejecting the offer from 14 months prior led the Mariners to delay his major league opportunities, suggesting potential service time manipulation. Mariners General Manager Jerry Dipoto publicly denied these accusations during a media appearance. Regardless, the scandal ultimately did not harm the Mariners in the long term.

Despite Kelenic’s physical talent and tools, his mental approach appeared to hold him back after his Major League debut in May 2021. Over 147 games in his first two seasons, he posted a .168 batting average, .589 OPS, 68 wRC+, and a -1.9 WAR, indicating serious struggles at the plate.

However, by the 2023 spring training, Kelenic displayed signs of maturity and improved his performance dramatically. He started the 2023 season strongly, hitting .308 with a .982 OPS through April and maintaining those leads through May.

Internal Tensions and On-Field Challenges in 2023

The momentum faltered considerably in June when Kelenic’s batting average dropped to .173 and OPS to .588, which appeared to affect his mental state again. Though never officially confirmed, reports suggested his attitude caused unease in the Mariners’ clubhouse. The situation escalated on July 20 when Kelenic fractured his left foot after kicking a Gatorade cooler in frustration, sidelining him on the 10-day injured list.

Kelenic expressed remorse for the incident and acknowledged he had let his teammates down. Still, upon returning on September 11, he completed the most productive season of his Major League career, achieving personal bests including 2.1 WAR, 49 RBIs, and a 111 OPS+. Despite this progress, the Mariners traded him to the Atlanta Braves in December.

With the Braves, the Wisconsin native played a career-high 131 games in 2024 but delivered only an average performance overall. His slow start in the following season led to a demotion to Triple-A, where he finished the year. After the 2025 season ended, Kelenic entered free agency and signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox, hoping to impress as a non-roster invitee during spring training. Still, expectations remain low for the once highly-touted prospect.

Reflecting on Kelenic’s Time with the Mariners

Looking back, Kelenic’s legacy with Seattle is mixed at best. Rather than the star many expected, his main lasting contribution to the Mariners’ culture might be the nickname he created for teammate Cal Raleigh: Big Dumper.” For a player once considered a top prospect with immense potential, this label underscores a disappointing career trajectory and Seattle’s relief that he never signed the lucrative six-year deal offered years ago.
