Murakami Beats Traffic, Shines in Chicago White Sox Spring Debut

MESA, Ariz. — Munetaka Murakami narrowly avoided missing his Chicago White Sox spring debut on Friday after being delayed by heavy traffic caused by a major accident on the highway near Phoenix. Despite concerns about his timely arrival, the first baseman reached Sloan Park just before the 1:05 p.m. start, securing his place in the starting lineup for the White Sox’s Cactus League opener.

Murakami described the chaotic journey through an interpreter, saying,

“I was so concerned if I could make it on time. There was a big accident on the highway and I was just concerned the whole time. I was actually in the car until 12:50 (for a 1:05 p.m. start).”

Strong Performance in Opening Game Despite Limited Preparation

Although Murakami did not have ample time to prepare mentally or physically before the game, he displayed impressive form. He recorded two hits in four at-bats and drove in two runs during the White Sox’s commanding 8-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs in their spring training opener. This performance highlighted his readiness despite the travel challenges.

Reflecting on his debut, Murakami remarked,

“I’m really happy how it went without any injuries,”

and added,

“I had butterflies inside me the first few minutes of it. But after I started fielding and I got an at-bat, I felt a bit more comfortable and felt myself.”

Key Moments Highlight Murakami’s Contribution

Murakami’s first plate appearance saw him ground out to Cubs second baseman Pedro Ramírez, closing the initial inning. However, he quickly found his rhythm, collecting his first spring training hit in the third inning with a sharp single to center field off Connor Schultz.

In the fourth inning, with the bases loaded against Porter Hodge, Murakami hit a two-run double to deep center field, a ball that White Sox outfielder Seiya Suzuki struggled to track down, landing on the warning track and extending Chicago’s lead to 6-1. Murakami described the at-bat as,

“It was a great at-bat. I was able to get good angles on the bat and velocity. I’m really happy how it went and how it went over my friend as well.”

He struck out looking in his final at-bat in the sixth inning but finished with two of the team’s 12 hits overall.

Manager Praises Murakami’s Composure and Adaptability

White Sox manager Will Venable was impressed by Murakami’s resilience in overcoming the traffic delay and performing well in his first spring game. Venable said,

“Mune especially was stuck back there (in the traffic) and did a great job, and for his first spring game to have that happen but be able to collect himself and come out here and have a good game, that was awesome.”

Venable also expressed enthusiasm about the team’s offensive display, noting the contributions beyond Murakami’s efforts.

Additional Offensive Highlights and Pitching Performance

The White Sox displayed potent offense against Cubs starting pitcher Jameson Taillon, including two home runs. Austin Hays, the team’s offseason left field acquisition, launched a solo homer in the first inning, while promising second baseman and World Baseball Classic prospect Sam Antonacci added a two-run blast in the second inning. On his approach, Antonacci stated,

“Just put the ball in play, try to find a way to get on base for the people behind me.”

White Sox starter Jonathan Cannon benefited from the strong run support, pitching 1 2/3 innings while allowing a single run on two hits and striking out three. Cannon shared his focus on refining his pitching by saying,

“Wanted to work on the two fastballs, sinker and four-seam. That’s kind of been a point of emphasis this spring. And then just kind of dialing back in the offspeed command, I thought that could be better, that was just kind of the point of improvement going forward, could definitely be more in the zone a little bit more. But overall, I thought it was good, a lot to build off of, long spring ahead.”

Murakami also contributed defensively, making a notable play in the second inning by fielding a hard-hit grounder from B.J. Murray and making a quick flip to Cannon covering first base.

Looking Ahead: Murakami’s Plans and Team Updates

After navigating the stressful travel and delivering a solid debut, Murakami expressed relief and satisfaction with his performance. He said,

“I’m very relieved right now that I got one game past me. I was glad to get the two hits.”

Murakami aims to play in five spring games before departing on February 27 to join Team Japan for the World Baseball Classic.

Manager Venable praised Murakami’s dedication and flexibility, emphasizing his professional attitude. Venable commented,

“You’ve got to give Mune a lot of credit. This guy is so committed and such a professional. We’ve asked him to do some things that he hasn’t necessarily been accustomed to and how he prepares and his adaptability and flexibility to do those things has been awesome. That adjustability gives you confidence that he’s going to be able to go out there and make adjustments throughout the year. He’s just a guy that even though he wants to play nine innings every one of these games, we’ve got a plan for him and he’s behind and supportive of what we’ve laid out for him and he did a great job today.”

The White Sox made a precautionary roster change for the opener, scratching right fielder Everson Pereira due to tightness on his right side. Venable offered an update, saying,

“Just a little soreness. Just really precautionary. Wanted to make sure we didn’t put him in a tough spot. But he’ll be day to day and we’ll see where he’s at.”

Significance of the Spring Opener and Team Outlook

Murakami’s ability to overcome unforeseen challenges and perform well in his Chicago White Sox spring debut signals strong potential for the upcoming season. His early contributions and the entire team’s offensive outburst against the Cubs offer an encouraging foundation as the White Sox continue their spring training preparations. With key players recovering and prospects like Sam Antonacci gaining momentum, the team looks poised to build on these promising early performances.
