Giants’ Jung Hoo Lee Shifts Focus to Right Field in 2026

As the 2026 baseball season approaches, San Francisco Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee is gearing up for a significant change, focusing on playing right field. After establishing himself as a strong presence in center field, Lee is adapting to a new position to meet the team’s evolving needs, aiming to continue contributing both offensively and defensively.

Reported by Janie McCauley of the Associated Press on Friday, this adjustment comes as the Giants restructure their outfield following recent roster changes. Lee’s transition to right field is part of the team’s strategy to optimize their defensive alignment while maintaining his impact at the plate.

Reasons Behind Lee’s Move to Right Field

Since joining the Giants in 2024, Jung Hoo Lee has been the starting centerfielder, traditionally paired with Heliot Ramos in left field and Mike Yastrzemski in right. However, Yastrzemski’s trade departure last season created an opening in right field that the team is now addressing.

With the signing of Harrison Bader on a two-year deal to patrol center field, Lee has begun shifting his attention to mastering right field duties. This adjustment is aimed at strengthening the Giants’ outfield defensive coverage while making the most of each player’s strengths.

Speaking through interpreter Justin Han, Lee shared with the Associated Press,

“There’s a lot of communication going on throughout these practices and also these drills that happen in the outfield. As more time goes by, I would love to spend more time with Bader and communicate.”

Lee is currently practicing at the Giants’ minor league complex in Arizona, where the right field configuration closely mimics that of Oracle Park’s expansive right field area, helping him acclimate to the new position.

Giants manager Tony Vitello highlighted Lee’s dedication:

“He’s a diligent worker, so he’s always focused, and I think everything that you would put under the category of him getting to know Bader and taking on the right field challenge full head of steam and all that is just [that] he wants to win. He’s pretty adamant about winning.”

Regarding their growing partnership, Vitello added,

“It’s hard not to bond with Jungy, he’s as easy to get along with as anybody. And yet he takes his craft very seriously.”

Jung Hoo Lee’s Journey with the Giants So Far

Lee signed a lucrative six-year contract worth $113 million with San Francisco in December 2023, quickly becoming a fan favorite. His rookie season, however, was cut short by a dislocated shoulder sustained after crashing into the outfield fence, limiting him to just 37 games before needing season-ending surgery.

Returning fully in 2025, Lee played 150 games and posted a .266 batting average, with eight home runs and 55 RBIs on 149 hits. The majority of his playtime—144 games—was in center field. Despite a midseason batting slump in June and July, he rebounded strongly in September, finishing with a .315/.367/.425 slash line.

Upcoming Schedule and Expectations for the Giants

The Giants are set to start spring training on Saturday, February 21, with an away game against the Seattle Mariners in the Cactus League. The 2026 regular season opener will feature a high-profile three-game homestand against Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees, beginning Wednesday, March 25.

While the teams have not yet announced their starting lineups, it is widely expected that Jung Hoo Lee will bat near the top of the order and make his regular-season debut in right field. This new role represents both a challenge and an opportunity for Lee to showcase his versatility and help lead the Giants.
