SURPRISE, Ariz. — Brandon Nimmo has not appeared in the Texas Rangers‘ first two spring training games and is unlikely to participate in an exhibition matchup until early March. Despite this, he recorded the highest number of at-bats on the team during Friday’s batting practice session, a key part of his measured approach to ramping up for the new season.
Building Consistency Through Controlled Preparation
Nimmo transformed his approach during the shortened 2022 spring training, creating a routine that foundations his current preparation. This strategy has helped him become one of 17 major leaguers to average 150 games and 650 plate appearances annually over the last four years. Rather than rushing into game speed, Nimmo emphasizes quality at-bats, taking eight live batting practice swings against minor league pitchers on Friday. This method allows him to simulate game situations while maintaining controlled conditions to focus on running and defensive work.
Lessons from Past Seasons Inform Current Strategy
Prior to 2022, Nimmo had never reached 150 games in a season. The shorter spring training that year prompted a more condensed and intense preparation style, which has proven effective as he has crossed that threshold each subsequent year.
“We had a shortened spring and I had fit more into into less,”
Nimmo explained.
“I ended up playing center field and I played 150 games plus. We took that and kind of said that worked well — there’s a lot more that goes into preparation — but it seemed like a good start for me to get off on the right foot so that I can physically handle the demands early. This has been the best way for me to be durable.”
Comparisons with Other Players’ Approaches
Rangers outfielder Wyatt Langford is also taking a slower approach this spring after an oblique strain delayed his progress last year. Unlike Nimmo’s indefinite holdout from game action, Langford is expected to make his spring training debut on Tuesday, highlighting different pacing for players returning from varying circumstances.
Implications for the Rangers’ Season Start
By focusing on gradual integration rather than rushing early game appearances, Brandon Nimmo’s method aims to ensure durability and effectiveness throughout the 2024 season. This careful ramp-up could provide the Rangers with a dependable contributor ready for the rigors of a full campaign. The team’s management and fans will be watching closely to see how this approach translates to on-field performance as the regular season approaches.
