Rhys Hoskins Joins Guardians on Minor League Deal Soon

The Cleveland Guardians are set to sign free-agent first baseman Rhys Hoskins to a minor league contract, according to a report from The Athletic on Sunday. The agreement includes a $1.5 million base salary if Hoskins secures a spot on the major league roster. Hoskins was present at the Guardians’ spring training clubhouse in Arizona on Sunday, although he still needs to complete a physical examination.

Hoskins’ Career Background and Recent Performance

Turning 33 next month, Rhys Hoskins previously played six seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies before joining the Milwaukee Brewers for the past two years. He did not participate in the 2023 season after suffering a torn ACL during spring training. Over his career, Hoskins has maintained a batting average of .238, hitting 186 home runs and driving in 530 runs.

Last season, Hoskins appeared in only 90 games for the Brewers due to injuries, including a left thumb UCL sprain and bone bruise. During that time, he posted a .237 batting average with 12 home runs and 43 RBIs. Meanwhile, Andrew Vaughn, acquired from the Chicago White Sox, has taken over the first base role.

Implications of Hoskins’ Signing for the Guardians

The Guardians’ acquisition of Hoskins provides them with a potential power bat and experienced first baseman depth as they prepare for the upcoming season. If Hoskins recovers fully and performs well in spring training, he could add valuable offense to Cleveland’s lineup. This signing reflects the Guardians’ strategy to strengthen their roster through low-risk deals with veteran players who have shown promise despite recent setbacks.
