Nick Kurtz Leadoff Debut Sparks Hope for 2026 Season

Nick Kurtz started the spring with an 0-for-3 performance leading off during Sunday’s Cactus League game against the Guardians. Though it was his first opportunity in this role during exhibition play, there is growing interest in seeing Kurtz occupy the leadoff spot for the 2026 season.

Manager’s Perspective on Batting Order and Player Utilization

Manager Mark Kotsay indicated that the lineup order remains flexible, and placing Kurtz at the top in spring games primarily aims to provide him with more early at-bats in exhibition play. Kotsay also expressed a favorable view of Kurtz leading off, as noted by reporter Martin Gallegos.

“My opinion, getting the best hitter on the team the most amount of at-bats is productive,”

said Kotsay.

“Especially when that at-bat comes around the 18th through the 21st out of a game when a starter is going through a lineup a third time, it’s nice to get those guys an opportunity. It presents a leverage situation.”

Implications for the Upcoming Season

This approach to lineup construction reflects a strategic effort to maximize Kurtz’s impact by placing a powerful slugger at the beginning of the order, potentially reshaping the team’s offensive dynamics in 2026. As spring progresses, further evaluation will determine whether Kurtz maintains the leadoff role into the regular season, signaling a new phase for the team’s batting strategy.
