Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Shane Bieber, who opted in for a $16 million deal this offseason, will postpone the start of his 2026 campaign due to forearm fatigue. The veteran right-hander is currently focused on recovering before fully returning to the mound.
Alongside Bieber’s health update, his wife Kara Maxine revealed on her Instagram story that she experienced a recent setback battling the flu.
“Still unpacking – set back with the flu,” Kara wrote in her story. “Wowwwww hopefully turning a corner. But that absolutely hit me like a bus, I couldn’t get out of bed for 2 days, anyone else?”
The couple welcomed their first child, son Kav McClain, before Bieber’s March 2025 trade from the Cleveland Guardians to the Blue Jays. Kara also shared a snapshot of Kav enjoying time on their sofa over the weekend.
Blue Jays Manager John Schneider Comments on Bieber’s Progress
Blue Jays manager John Schneider provided details last week regarding Bieber’s recovery as the team prepared for Spring Training.
“Biebs isn’t that far behind. Biebs is throwing and feeling good. He’s out to 120 feet,” Schneider said. “Hopefully in the next week to two weeks, he’ll be getting off the mound and starting his progression. There are options coming, too.”
As Bieber’s readiness for Opening Day remains uncertain, the Blue Jays are set to rely on Dylan Cease, Kevin Gausman, and Trey Yesavage to front the pitching rotation early in the season.
Bieber’s Determination to Return Despite Setback
After the Blue Jays’ recent World Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bieber expressed motivation to bounce back and compete at a high level this year.
“We’re going to take it slow and be smart. It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish,” Bieber said, “and we definitely know that coming off of last year. I know this group’s hungry and I’m extremely hungry. I can’t wait to get back out there.”
The delayed start due to forearm fatigue marks a cautious approach for Bieber, prioritizing long-term health over rushing back. His recovery pace will shape the Blue Jays’ rotation strategy in the critical early months of 2026, while fans and teammates alike anticipate the reunion with their ace. With a talented group eager to improve on last season, Bieber’s eventual return could be pivotal for Toronto’s postseason ambitions.
