Tarik Skubal Out for Team USA in World Baseball Classic Final

Team USA’s roster for the World Baseball Classic was anticipated to be one of their strongest ever, but it has faced a setback. Two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal will only appear once during the pool play stage, pitching against Great Britain on March 7. If the United States advances to the championship round, Skubal will not participate further.

Skubal’s Absence Leaves a Void in the Pitching Rotation

Skubal shared with reporters on Monday, including those from The Athletic,

“If they go to the finals, I think I’m going to try and lobby to just go watch and be with the guys.”

Despite his exceptional track record—claiming two consecutive AL Cy Young awards, two straight AL ERA titles, and holding a 2.04 ERA over six playoff starts—the pitcher will not contribute in the latter stages of the tournament.

His absence means the role of team ace will likely fall solely on Paul Skenes, rather than the duo acting as co-aces. Nevertheless, Team USA’s starting pitcher depth remains solid, with All-Stars Logan Webb and Matthew Boyd providing additional options. Joe Ryan, currently managing a back injury, along with younger players Nolan McLean and Mets veteran Clay Holmes, round out the pitching staff.

Strong Offensive Lineup Offers Hope Despite Pitching Challenges

Offensively, Team USA boasts significant firepower with stars such as Aaron Judge, Cal Raleigh, Bobby Witt Jr., Bryce Harper, and Kyle Schwarber leading the charge. While losing Skubal for the final rounds is disappointing, the team retains ample talent to remain a formidable contender.

Upcoming World Baseball Classic and Team USA’s Prospects

The tournament begins next week with pool play taking place in Tokyo, San Juan, Houston, and Miami. The championship game is scheduled for March 17 at Miami’s LoanDepot Park. Team USA is positioned as a strong favorite to win this year’s event, following their 2017 championship win and a runner-up finish to Japan in 2023. Betting odds place the Americans at -115, ahead of Japan (+350) and the Dominican Republic (+425).

The loss of Tarik Skubal for the later rounds introduces an element of uncertainty, but the team’s overall talent and depth keep hopes high for securing the World Baseball Classic title once again.
