Ernie Clement Eyes Big Impact for Team USA, Blue Jays

DUNEDIN, Fla. — Ernie Clement, infielder for the Toronto Blue Jays and longtime Buffalo Sabres supporter, grew increasingly motivated to compete for Team USA at the upcoming World Baseball Classic after witnessing Jack Hughes secure an overtime gold medal for the United States in the Winter Olympics. Clement’s enthusiasm stems from the pride and emotion he observed during the Games, fueling his eagerness to represent his country on the baseball field in March.

Clement Reflects on Passion and Intensity from Past International Competitions

Drawing on a deep appreciation for American national teams over the years, Clement referred to the legendary 1980 “Miracle on Ice” hockey team and recalled significant moments from previous World Baseball Classics. He highlighted Adam Jones’ remarkable catch at the 2017 tournament as an example of the emotion and intensity players bring to the international stage, even before the regular MLB season begins. This passion resonates with Clement, who thrives when the stakes are highest and prepares to bring that same energy to Team USA.

First Opportunity to Represent USA Comes After Record-Breaking MLB Postseason

The 29-year-old Clement will join the USA squad for the first time in his career when he departs for the World Baseball Classic on March 1. Despite never having played for a national team before, he expressed that it is a tremendous honor. His invitation follows a standout 2025 season highlighted by a strong batting line of .277/.313/.398 and defensive recognition at third base and in utility roles, culminating with a postseason record of 30 hits—an achievement that has raised his profile considerably.

Manager Mark DeRosa’s Role in Clement’s National Team Invitation

USA’s manager, Mark DeRosa, sought a versatile player capable of contributing both offensively and defensively. He reached out to Blue Jays associate manager DeMarlo Hale, who coached Clement in Toronto, to gather insights, which led to Clement’s official selection. This opportunity marks a significant milestone, especially considering Clement only signed a minor-league deal with Toronto after being released by the Athletics in March 2023, a move that accelerated his career growth.

Clement’s Progression from Minor Leagues to MLB Success and Playoff Breakout

After gaining attention during 29 major league games in 2023, Clement solidified his spot with the Blue Jays the following year. His breakout 2025 campaign demonstrated his ability both at the plate and in the field, earning him serious Gold Glove consideration and recognition for his utility versatility. He further elevated his performance in the playoffs, going 30-for-73 over 18 games, scoring 13 runs and driving in nine, an intensity he hopes to replicate this season.

Clement Emphasizes Mental Focus and Preparation During Playoff Success

Reflecting on his postseason achievements, Clement highlighted the importance of preparation and mental focus under pressure.

“I have a lot to build off,”

he said.

“That was success on the highest stage, in the most pressure, and I feel like I did a really good job of slowing the game down because of how I prepared and got ready for the game. I could just go out there and trust my instincts and I didn’t have to think about anything. It was a locked-in and a focus that I’ve known I can get to. It took a lot of failure throughout the year and throughout my career but I’ve found what works for me. I think I can keep that going through this year.”

Industry Challenges Ahead as Clement’s Postseason Profile Rises

Having demonstrated such clutch performance, Clement acknowledged the challenges he will face as teams study his strengths. During the playoffs, he noticed that opposing pitchers targeted him heavily, understanding that he presented a more strategic threat than superstars like George Springer or Vladimir Guerrero Jr. This forced Clement to maintain an aggressive approach at the plate, which he embraced.

Approach at the Plate and Adaptations Expected This Season

When questioned about his strong postseason at-bats, Clement noted,

“Who would you rather face, Ernie Clement or George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.?”

He added,

“I wasn’t going to let them steal a strike. My swing was in a good spot and I knew they were going to attack me. It fed right into my strength.”

Toronto Blue Jays hitting coach David Popkins confirmed that while teams will likely adjust their pitching strategies, Clement is proactively preparing multiple approaches to keep opposing pitchers off balance.

“He’s building out some plans to counter that and feature some different versions of himself,”

Popkins said.

“That’s what makes him really hard to pitch to. You don’t know if he’s going to jump you or grind you out. He’s just an awesome guy with a very special skill-set, and that’s what we saw there.”

Memorable Moments From the Playoff Run and Moving Forward

Clement’s postseason could have included a World Series-winning hit, though it was denied after a late Dodgers defensive shift and a spectacular catch by center-fielder Andy Pages. Over the winter, Clement reviewed the play multiple times but quickly transitioned his mindset to the future.

“When I woke up the morning of Game 7, because I really didn’t get very much sleep, I told myself this is the last game no matter what, win or lose, this it, and it was a very liberating, freeing feeling. Like, Let’s go out there with our hair on fire and whatever happens, happens,”

he said.

“After the game, I wanted to soak in every minute with the boys. These are going to be some of my best friends forever, even after my baseball career is over. We spent every waking second with each other and we played so hard for each other, it was so much fun and I just really didn’t want it to end.”

Quick Turnaround to Offseason and Renewed Focus on Upcoming Goals

Recognizing the resilience required in professional baseball, Clement emphasized the importance of moving forward quickly after setbacks.

“But being a baseball player, one of our superpowers is being able to turn the page and move on pretty quickly,”

he said.

“I was able to be thankful for the season. I couldn’t wait to get home and see my buddies and my family who I didn’t really get to spend a whole lot of time with in that playoff run. That’s all I could think about, hanging with those guys for as long as possible and then I was able to just flip the switch and go into off-season mode.”

Resetting for Another Chance to Shine at World Baseball Classic and MLB Season

With renewed determination, Clement is ready to chase new career milestones both on the international stage with Team USA in the World Baseball Classic and in the regular Major League Baseball season with the Toronto Blue Jays. His ability to thrive under pressure and adapt to evolving challenges makes him a key player to watch in the months ahead.
