Throughout the offseason, the future of Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal has dominated discussions among fans and analysts, fueled by intense speculation about his next move. Initially linked to trade rumors, Skubal—who will enter free agency after the upcoming season—was rumored to be a potential trade candidate as the Tigers weighed their options. However, those trade talks died down, giving way to an extensive arbitration process that Skubal recently concluded successfully. Now, he prepares to lead Detroit into the 2026 season, with his free agency looming and attracting significant attention across Major League Baseball.
Recognized as one of the sport’s premier starting pitchers and a two-time American League Cy Young Award winner, Skubal is expected to be among the most coveted free agents in recent memory. His agent, Scott Boras, addressed those expectations during a Tuesday appearance on The Show, emphasizing a competitive bidding landscape.
Scott Boras Predicts Broad Competition for Skubal’s Services
Scott Boras compared Skubal’s impending free agency to previous high-profile negotiations, including those involving Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani, noting that interest spans the entire league rather than focusing on just a few markets. He explained how multiple teams from both the East and West Coasts are likely to pursue Skubal aggressively because elite starting pitching is rare and highly sought after.

“The one thing you learn from the (Juan) Soto negotiations, even though it was a year before with (Shohei) Ohtani, you had multiple teams from the West Coast and East Coast bidding on a player, you had multiple teams that were interested in really going the mark to get the game’s best talent. So, limiting it to New York teams or LA teams, I think, is something that’s just not accurate. Obviously, this is a talent-driven business,” Boras said (35:35).
Boras also highlighted the critical impact of having a top-tier starting pitcher, referencing Gerrit Cole’s influence on the Yankees’ consistent contention for the World Series:
“This is something that brings you World Championships, having No. 1 starters. We learned from Gerrit Cole what that meant to the Yankees. It allowed them to compete annually for a World Series. So, I think that teams are very aware of this, and I would fully imagine that it’s good business to go out and get someone that you can’t get (elsewhere). Because acquiring a player like this, you know, it’s going to be years before you’re going to have an opportunity to acquire anyone like him,” he added.
Tigers Manager Shares Insights Into Skubal’s Focus Amid Offseason Distractions
Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch shed light on Skubal’s mental approach as he enters a pivotal season, given the considerable offseason attention surrounding his contract status. Speaking on February 3 during Tiger Territory, Hinch described Skubal as centered and composed despite the ongoing public speculation.
“So I just spent a few days with Tarik Skubal in New York. He’s in a really great place. I love how he’s handled the public nature of his offseason and the private nature of his offseason. On the public side, he’s separated business and baseball. He knows I’m a confidant if he wants to talk to me about it. The private side, we’ve got to keep the environment, the hunger, the preparation, and the work, we’ve got to keep pushing him,” Hinch said (24:50).
Hinch emphasized his role in maintaining an environment that supports Skubal’s performance on the mound, allowing the business side of his career to be managed by his representatives. He noted that despite the overwhelming trade rumors, arbitration debates, and free agency talks, Skubal remains focused and undistracted by external noise.
“My role in this whole year for him is to continue to create an environment he thrives under. What he’s done on the field when he’s competing is second to none. So, for us, we focus entirely on that, and let the business aspect of his situation happen with his people, and support him the best that we can. I know this offseason for him has been as public as anybody’s offseason. There’s nothing he can do that doesn’t get talked about. All these trade comments, the arbitration, the contract, the free agent year, it could be a distraction if he allowed it. That’s just not how he’s wired,” he added.
Skubal Aims for Historic Three-Peat Behind the Tigers’ Rotation
After claiming consecutive AL Cy Young trophies in 2024 and 2025, Tarik Skubal is poised to pursue a historic third straight win in 2026. As he continues to anchor Detroit’s pitching staff, his performance will be critical for the team’s aspirations to return to postseason prominence. With his reputation and ability making him a unique talent in MLB, Skubal’s free agency is shaping up to be a defining moment not only for the player but also for the franchises interested in acquiring an elite starter.
The high stakes surrounding Skubal’s free agency underline the scarcity of such caliber pitchers and the lengths teams will go to secure one. His agent’s comparison to the impact Gerrit Cole had on the Yankees highlights the strategic importance of dominant starters and the potential to transform a team’s competitive window.
