Wilyer Abreu’s Bat Breaks on Check-Swing—Here’s Why

During a recent spring training game, Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu experienced an unusual incident when his bat shattered on a check-swing without ever contacting the ball. The incident occurred in one of the team’s contests as they prepare for the upcoming MLB season. This rare occurrence raised questions about how the bat could break absent any direct impact.

Abreu Explains What Led to the Broken Bat

Wilyer Abreu addressed the baffling moment, sharing details on why his bat failed unexpectedly. According to reports by MLB insiders Ian Browne and Scott Chiusano, Abreu recognized something felt off with his bat during his previous at-bat. He said,

“I don’t know. That was kind of weird. It was the first time that happened to me. I don’t think that’s happened too many [other] times, either, so it just was weird,”

reflecting his surprise at the incident.

He went on to describe the sensation that preceded the break, stating,

“In the at-bat before, when I hit the ground ball to shortstop, I felt something weird on the bat. I felt something with the contact. It didn’t feel the right way. And in the next at-bat, I just broke it.”

Why Did He Not Switch Bats After Feeling Something Was Wrong?

Despite sensing an irregularity, Abreu chose to continue using the same bat in his next turn at the plate. He explained his reasoning, saying,

“I tried to see if it was broken, but I didn’t feel anything. I didn’t feel anything wrong with the bat. But in my mind, the sound was weird in the at-bat before, but I didn’t expect the bat would break like that.”

Bats Rarely Break Without Contact—Viral Video Draws Attention

Broken bats usually occur when the wood makes contact with a pitch, a ball hitting an awkward spot on the bat, or through deliberate breakage by frustrated hitters. In Abreu’s case, however, the bat fractured without striking anything, a rarity that caught the attention of fans and analysts alike. The video clip showing the bat snapping during a check-swing has quickly spread online.

Responding to the viral attention, Abreu acknowledged,

“Yeah, I mean, that video went viral. So I got a lot of messages,”

highlighting the surprising reach the footage has had.

Looking Ahead to Upcoming Competitions

Wilyer Abreu is expected to bring his talents to the World Baseball Classic, representing Team Venezuela when the tournament begins on March 5. Following the WBC, the Red Sox will kick off their regular season on March 26, facing the Cincinnati Reds. Hopefully, future broken bats will come as a byproduct of solid hits rather than frustrated swings or rare breaks like the one in spring training.
