Why Giants’ Vitello Passed on Max Scherzer in Free Agency

Tony Vitello and the San Francisco Giants faced a notable decision during this past MLB free agency period involving Max Scherzer free agency. Given their two-decade-long connection, many assumed a reunion in San Francisco might be imminent. However, Scherzer ultimately chose to sign with the Toronto Blue Jays instead. When asked on Foul Territory whether the Giants pursued Scherzer, Vitello acknowledged there was no formal effort to sign him.

We never really crossed that line,

Vitello said.

“I don’t know if it’s mutual respect… I would always joke with everyone, they’d ask, I’m like, ‘It’s not like I’m inviting this guy to a Halloween party, or a social event.’ It’s gotta be a match, and there’s contracts and things involved. I just know there was a really good go back and forth between he and the Blue Jays, an immense appreciation for one another.”

Reasons Behind Scherzer’s Choice to Join the Blue Jays

Max Scherzer, even at 41, remains a formidable starting pitcher who could have added veteran depth to the Giants’ rotation. Nonetheless, several personal factors led him to the Blue Jays. Vitello remarked on Scherzer’s preference for the East Coast, citing family ties and lifestyle considerations that influenced the pitcher’s decision.

It’s not my business to say his deal, but he’s pretty east coast flavored right now. Both sets of grandparents are there. They got four kids. It’s a great match, so I’m happy for him.

Ongoing Relationship and Competitive Camaraderie

Despite not joining the Giants, Scherzer and Vitello maintain a cordial and competitive relationship, often engaging in friendly banter. Vitello confirmed that their interactions, including some light-hearted smack talk, are ongoing as they prepare for their upcoming seasons.

The group chat smack talk has already started,

Vitello admitted. But it’s all very light-hearted.

Both parties now focus on guiding their respective teams through the 2026 MLB season, with Vitello aiming to build a strong roster for the Giants, while Scherzer brings his experience to the Blue Jays.
