Rockies’ Brenton Doyle Battles Wrist Injury Ahead of Season

Colorado Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle is dealing with a sprained left wrist, sidelining him from the last three Spring Training games after feeling soreness before a game on Wednesday, according to Thomas Harding of MLB.com. Doyle will rest his wrist for several days before undergoing another medical evaluation.

Uncertainty Remains Over Opening Day Availability

At this stage, there is no clear indication that Doyle will miss Opening Day, but his status will depend on the results of his follow-up examination. The two-time Gold Glove recipient has about a month to recover before the regular season begins, though the Rockies have not disclosed how severe the injury is.

Offensive Struggles Highlight Need for Recovery

Doyle is attempting to rebound after a difficult season at the plate, where he hit .233/.274/.376 in 538 plate appearances, placing him near the bottom among MLB players in on-base percentage (minimum 500 PAs). This downturn followed a stronger campaign two years prior, when he posted a .260/.317/.446 slash line with 23 home runs and 30 stolen bases, adjusting roughly to league average when considering Coors Field’s influence.

Defensive and Baserunning Skills Remain Valuable

If Doyle returns to near-average offensive production, his overall value would be significant given his excellent defense and solid baserunning. The Rockies have received trade inquiries about the 27-year-old but chose not to pursue a trade during the offseason, avoiding a low-return deal. As a Super Two arbitration-eligible player, Doyle currently earns $3.1 million and remains under contract with Colorado through 2029.

Potential Roster Adjustments if Doyle’s Injury Persists

Assuming full health, Doyle will be the primary center fielder under manager Warren Schaeffer. Should the injury hinder his availability, the Rockies could shift offseason acquisition Jake McCarthy to center field, while Jordan Beck, Mickey Moniak, Zac Veen, and Tyler Freeman might share corner outfield duties.

“There’s no indication at this point that Doyle’s availability for Opening Day is in jeopardy.” – Thomas Harding, MLB.com
