Paul Blackburn’s Crisp Performance Proves Yankees’ Wise Move

TAMPAPaul Blackburn is making a strong case as a valuable asset for the New York Yankees as he continues to impress during spring training. After signing a one-year, $2 million deal with the Yankees in August, Blackburn demonstrated his skill by delivering four scoreless innings in the Yankees’ 5-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Saturday. The 32-year-old right-hander has now gone six innings this spring without allowing a run, hinting at renewed form ahead of the season.

Manager Aaron Boone Praises Blackburn’s Command and Efficiency

Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed optimism surrounding Blackburn’s current state. Boone noted,

“We feel like he’s in a really good place. We were hoping to get two or three innings out of him probably and he was so efficient he ends up going four … [He] was excellent, really from the jump. Really crisp. Command was excellent. I was really pleased. I thought his stuff looked real sharp.”

Boone also highlighted Blackburn’s past success and current control on the mound:

“He’s been an All-Star. This guy’s been a good starting pitcher. And he’s not old. You see him go out there and watch that, he’s carving out there. He’s in complete control of things, commanding the ball well. We brought him back for a reason.”

Mixed Results Last Season Before Finding Bullpen Groove

While Blackburn has shown promise, last season revealed moments of struggle that warned of potential setbacks. Before the Mets released him, he recorded a high 6.85 ERA across seven appearances, including four starts. His Yankees debut was rocky as he allowed seven runs in relief duty. However, Blackburn quickly adapted, lowering his arm slot and returning to a comfort zone that revitalized his pitching. During his subsequent bullpen appearances, he posted an impressive 1.50 ERA and struck out 14 batters across 12 innings.

Blackburn reflected on his adjustment, saying,

“I felt like I was fighting myself a lot. I didn’t feel like I was myself at all. In August, I kind of said, ‘Screw it,’ and went back to how I was — more over the top, more trying to drive the ball down. When I came here, I talked to the pitching guys and that’s where they want me. When I showed up here, [I was] just getting a little more comfortable back in that arm slot I’ve always been in, just being able to get my pitches back to where they were in previous years, being able to move the ball around and roll good outings together.”

He also emphasized,

“I’m not gonna throw gas by people, so I just gotta locate and change speeds.”

Flexible Role Expected as Yankees Eye Various Uses for Blackburn

Boone anticipates deploying Blackburn in multiple capacities throughout the season, including as a starter until the rotation stabilizes. Nevertheless, Blackburn’s primary value to the Yankees is projected to come from the bullpen, where he appeared exclusively during his time with New York last year. Notably, relief pitching remains a relatively new territory for Blackburn, who had only four relief appearances during his first eight seasons.

On transitioning to the bullpen, Blackburn noted,

“I think my time here last year definitely got me really familiar with it. You had guys down there like Luke [Weaver] — I know he made that transition — and he helped a bunch, picking his brain about what he did. … The more I did it, the more comfortable I felt doing it.”

Implications for the Yankees’ 2026 Season Strategy

Blackburn’s resurgence offers the Yankees additional depth and flexibility as they navigate the challenges of a long season. His capacity to deliver quality innings in multiple roles could prove vital, particularly as the team manages injuries and workload among starters. His ability to command the ball and adjust his pitching style suggests he can contribute effectively, supporting New York’s pitching staff on various fronts.

Manager Aaron Boone’s confidence in Blackburn underscores the team’s faith in his potential to stabilize key innings and maintain competitiveness. Given his recent performances at George M. Steinbrenner Field, Blackburn’s role in the Yankees’ 2026 campaign will bear watching as he strives to build on this promising beginning.
