The New York Yankees continue to explore their roster options despite largely finalizing their lineup for the upcoming season. Early in the offseason, the team showed serious interest in Texas Rangers third baseman Corey Seager, a two-time World Series champion, as a potential upgrade at shortstop amid concerns about Anthony Volpe’s recent offensive and defensive performance. These preliminary trade discussions, however, did not advance to serious negotiations, and the Yankees’ roster now resembles last year’s setup in most respects.
MLB insider Joel Sherman noted that the Yankees’ consideration of Seager stemmed from a desire to strengthen the shortstop position after Volpe’s noticeable decline. Although acquiring Seager was seen as an ideal solution, the talks remained exploratory and did not develop into concrete offers, leaving the Yankees to maintain confidence in their current squad.
Kansas City Royals Finalize Agreement with Starling Marte
The Kansas City Royals have secured free agent outfielder Starling Marte on a one-year contract, pending his physical. This move requires the Royals to adjust their 40-man roster to accommodate Marte’s addition. Marte concluded his four-year, $78 million contract with the New York Mets last season but had limited playing time due to several injuries, including groin issues, neck strain, migraines, and a bone bruise on his right knee.
During his four-year stint with the Mets, Marte appeared in only 396 games, with just 12 appearances in the outfield last season. The Royals had expressed interest in Marte previously, even exploring a trade for him last winter. Their current outfield will feature Isaac Collins in left field and Kyle Isbel in center, while Lane Thomas and left-handed hitter Jac Caglianone are expected to share time in right field.
Marte’s recent two seasons show a .269/.331/.398 slash line with 16 home runs over 699 plate appearances. While he has maintained solid contact, there has been a noted decline in his power numbers. The Royals anticipate that Marte will see more consistent playing time in their lineup moving forward.
Context and Possible Impact for Both Teams
The Yankees’ early offseason consideration of Corey Seager reflects their cautious approach to reinforcing key positions without making drastic changes to a roster that performed well last season. Though their interest did not mature into a trade, it signals the team’s openness to pursuing veteran talent if it aligns with their strategic goals.
For the Royals, adding Marte contributes experience and versatility to an outfield that blends promising younger players like Collins, Isbel, Thomas, and Caglianone. Marte’s health and ability to regain his previous impact will be an important factor for Kansas City’s offensive ambitions in the coming season.
