Tarik Skubal Opens Up on Pitching Just One WBC Game for USA

Detroit Tigers standout pitcher Tarik Skubal, renowned for his exceptional talent and back-to-back American League Cy Young Awards, will participate in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) but will pitch in only one game, tentatively scheduled for March 7 against Great Britain. Skubal’s decision to limit his availability has sparked discussion among fans and analysts alike.

Expressing pride in representing the United States on an international level, Skubal shared his reasons for this choice during a recent episode of the Flippin’ Bats podcast. While he expressed disappointment at not being able to contribute in the knockout rounds, he emphasized concerns about his physical limits and long-term pitching health.

Explaining His Pitching Availability

Skubal addressed the challenges posed by the timing and intensity of the WBC, contrasting it with sports like hockey where international tournaments occur mid-season. He explained that throwing multiple full outings at the start of the MLB season is not feasible for him.

If this tournament was in the middle of our season, like it is in hockey, I’d have no problem throwing both games,

Skubal said.

You know, throwing as much as I can for Team USA, I’d have no problem. It’s just the fact that, you know, if you look at my velocity as the year goes on, I’m just simply not built up to throw four to five innings at 99 to 101. You know, I’m just not there.

He went on to explain the risks associated with sudden increases in workload early in the season.

I think anytime the workload gets really spiked like that, that’s when injuries start to happen. You know, workload changes start to happen. So whenever that happens, that’s kind of the concern on my end. And obviously the club and my agent, we’re all kind of in agreement there.

Balancing Team USA Commitment with Season Health

Despite his restrictions, Skubal deeply values being part of Team USA and expressed regret over not contributing in later tournament stages. He described his role as a balance between participation and preserving his health for the MLB season ahead.

I mean, it kills me,” Skubal said.

I want to be a part of it. So I think I got kind of the best of both worlds in this, making a start, being in the room, learning from all those guys, but obviously trying to stay healthy and pitch this season.

Hopes for Future Olympic and MLB Scheduling

Looking beyond the WBC, Skubal voiced his desire for clear communication between Major League Baseball and players regarding the scheduling of the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. He hopes MLB and the players’ association can coordinate in advance so players like him can participate without jeopardizing their health or season performance.

Hopefully they get the Olympics right, the Summer Olympics, and they can do something with our season,

Skubal remarked.

You know, I don’t know what the ideas are going to be, but hopefully MLB has something planned and they can communicate with the PA early so we can get an agreement done and do this thing. Because I mean, I’d love to do that.

Context and Impact on Fans and Team USA

Skubal’s candid explanation should ease concerns among fans who initially perceived his limited pitching as a lack of commitment to Team USA. His strategic approach highlights the tension many elite pitchers experience in balancing national representation with the physical demands of a grueling MLB season.

As the WBC progresses, Skubal’s single-game appearance will serve as an important contribution, while his health management could influence how pitchers approach international competitions in the future. The coordination between MLB and international events like the Olympics remains a key issue for players aiming to compete at the highest level without risking injury or diminished performance.
