Bruce Meyer, interim executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA), has indicated that a lockout appears almost certain once baseball’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA) ends on December 1, 2024. Meyer emphasized that the ongoing tension between the league and the players over contract terms is likely to trigger work stoppages soon after.
Comments Highlight Expectation of Lockout and Negotiation Plans
According to Meyer, the league has effectively signaled its intention to initiate a lockout when the current agreement expires.
The league has pretty much already said there’s going to be a lockout,
Meyer stated, as reported by Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press.
I think the commissioner (Rob Manfred) more or less guaranteed it. I would be shocked if they didn’t do a lockout when the agreement expires.
He added that despite these tensions, the players’ union aims to engage in negotiations in good faith shortly after Opening Day.
If there’s a way to avoid it and get a fair deal for the players, we’re always looking to do that,
Meyer said.
I think the expectations of a lockout upon the expiration of the agreement are very high – almost guaranteed.
Salary Cap Dispute Remains a Major Obstacle to Agreement
The potential introduction of a salary cap remains a critical point of disagreement between MLB and its players. Meyer reaffirmed the union’s opposition to this proposal, citing a longstanding refusal to accept any restrictions that could limit player earnings.
Our position, both historically and now, is pretty clear,
Meyer declared.
This union, and every executive director of this union, has always been of the view that it’s bad for the players, and for that reason, historically, we’ve been opposed to it. I don’t see any reason to change our view on that subject.
Historical Context and Potential Impact of Lockout on 2024 Season
The last lockout in Major League Baseball occurred from December 2, 2021, through March 10, 2022, lasting 99 days. It delayed spring training and postponed Opening Day but did not result in the cancellation of any regular-season games. Given this recent history and the current warnings, players, teams, and fans face uncertainty as the expiration of the CBA approaches, with possible disruptions that could affect the start of the 2024 season.
