Jared Young, a 30-year-old utility player and designated hitter for the New York Mets, is set to represent Canada in the 2026 World Baseball Classic taking place in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This will mark Young’s second consecutive appearance with Team Canada in the international tournament, where he is expected to bring valuable experience and skill to the squad.
Pre-Tournament Matchups and Tournament Schedule
Team Canada will begin its preparations with two home games in early March, facing the Toronto Blue Jays on March 3 and the Philadelphia Phillies on March 4. Following these tune-up matches, the team will travel to Puerto Rico to compete in the main tournament. Canada’s pool play schedule starts with a game against Colombia on March 7, then Panama on March 8, Puerto Rico on March 10, and Cuba on March 12.
Advancing Toward the Championship Rounds
The quarterfinal games are planned for March 13 and 14 in Houston, with the semifinals set for March 15 and 16, and the championship final scheduled for March 17 in Miami. All Canadian games will be broadcast live on Sportsnet, allowing fans nationwide to follow the team’s progress throughout the event.
Veteran Leadership and Early Preparations
Young emphasized the importance of early readiness in such a fast-paced competition. He stated,
“It’s a sprint, and the team that’s most prepared early is probably the team that’s more successful,”
highlighting how the returning veterans on Team Canada, including 22 MLB players, will benefit from their prior experience at the 2023 tournament. Young himself has started the 2024 season on a high note, demonstrating offensive strength in spring training with a home run against the Yankees and pivotal RBIs in a victory over the Astros.
Personal Highlights and Media Coverage
Off the field, Young recently celebrated his marriage to his wife Julia in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he has been spending the offseason. His journey with Team Canada and recent accomplishments will be featured in a special profile in the March 5 print edition of The Citizen.
