Keston Hiura Among Dodgers’ First Spring Training Cuts

The Los Angeles Dodgers have begun trimming their roster during Spring Training, reassigning several players to Minor League camp as of Monday morning. Among those sent down were Keston Hiura and a group of other non-roster invitees, signaling the team’s efforts to finalize their Major League contingent ahead of the regular season. This process occurs while the Dodgers continue to participate in exhibition games throughout March.

Players Reassigned to Minor League Camp

The players moved to Minor League camp include Patrick Copen, Luke Fox, Nick Frasso, Matt Gorski, Keston Hiura, Chris Newell, Chuckie Robinson, José Rodríguez, Jerming Rosario, Adam Serwinoski, and Nelson Quiroz. None of these players are currently on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster, but they remain eligible to play in the remaining Cactus League games during Spring Training despite leaving the main clubhouse at Camelback Ranch.

With these reassignments, the Dodgers now have 65 players remaining in Major League camp, consisting of 35 pitchers and 30 position players. This figure excludes Evan Phillips and Kiké Hernández, who are sidelined with injuries and placed on the 60-day injured list.

Performance of Key Reassigned Players

Patrick Copen, a right-handed pitcher, has appeared twice this spring and allowed two runs over two innings, doubling his appearance total from last year. Notably, Copen overcame significant adversity after losing sight in his right eye due to being struck by a comebacker and led all Dodgers’ Minor League pitchers with 152 strikeouts in 2025.

Luke Fox has pitched 1.2 innings over two appearances, striking out four but also walking three and conceding four runs. Nick Frasso, who rejoined the Dodgers organization on a Minor League deal in the offseason, has yet to take the mound this spring.

Matt Gorski, formerly drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates and having made his MLB debut last season, has not seen game action during the current Cactus League schedule.

Keston Hiura had the opportunity to compete for a Major League roster spot while Tommy Edman recovers from right ankle surgery. However, Hiura has played in seven games this spring with limited impact, recording only one hit—a home run—in 13 at-bats. He appears to have lagged behind other candidates such as Nick Senzel and Santiago Espinal in the competition for a roster place.

Chris Newell participated in seven games and notably hit a two-run homer in the Dodgers’ loss to the San Francisco Giants on February 27. Chuckie Robinson has yet to see Cactus League action and looks set to start the season with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

José Rodríguez, who made six relief appearances last spring, has not appeared in any games this spring. Jerming Rosario has pitched two scoreless innings across two appearances, while Adam Serwinoski has delivered four strikeouts over two games without allowing hits or runs. Serwinoski joined the Dodgers last year in a three-team trade involving the Cincinnati Reds and Tampa Bay Rays. Nelson Quiroz has appeared twice off the bench but is hitless in three at-bats.

Impact of Initial Cuts on Dodgers’ Roster Strategy

These initial reassignments reflect the Dodgers’ efforts to streamline their roster as they prepare for the upcoming season. By moving non-roster invitees like Keston Hiura and others to Minor League camp, the organization preserves flexibility while focusing on players more likely to contribute at the Major League level. Continued recovery of players such as Tommy Edman and the strong competition from prospects like Nick Senzel and Santiago Espinal will be closely monitored as the Dodgers finalize their lineup.

The Dodgers will carry on with Spring Training games in March to evaluate remaining players, but these early roster moves help clarify the composition of the Major League squad heading into the 2024 season.
