Logan Webb to Start WBC Opener for Team USA vs Brazil

San Francisco Giants ace Logan Webb will take the mound for Team USA in its opening World Baseball Classic (WBC) match on Friday against Brazil, manager Mark DeRosa confirmed Monday. This WBC start positions Webb as a key figure right at the tournament‘s kickoff, underlining the significance of his role for Team USA.

Pitching Rotation Highlights with Cy Young Winners and Rising Stars

Manager Mark DeRosa outlined the pitching schedule for the early WBC games, explaining that Tarik Skubal, a two-time defending American League Cy Young Award winner, is slated to start Saturday’s game against Britain. Following that, National League Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes is set to pitch Monday against Mexico. Additionally, Nolan McLean of the New York Mets is tentatively scheduled to start Tuesday in the final pool-play matchup against Italy, although he is currently dealing with an illness and missed Team USA’s Monday practice.

DeRosa stressed the challenge of managing pitcher workloads during the tournament:

There are obviously guardrails for the tournament to begin with, pitch-count wise, but there’s also guardrails for guys having to throw on certain days to get ready for their team’s opening day.

Preparation and Exhibition Games Before the Official Start

Before traveling to Houston for the WBC opener, Team USA will hold two exhibition games in Arizona on Tuesday and Wednesday. Paul Skenes is scheduled to start the Tuesday exhibition against the San Francisco Giants. Other pitchers expected to contribute in these warm-up games include Matthew Boyd, Gabe Speier, David Bednar, Griffin Jax, and Mason Miller. Skubal is anticipated to make only one start for Team USA before returning to the Detroit Tigers for the remainder of spring training.

Implications of the Pitching Strategy for Team USA’s WBC Campaign

The decision to have Webb start the opening game reflects Team USA’s strategic effort to balance competitive intensity with careful pitcher management amid the tight schedule of the tournament and MLB spring preparations. With established stars like Skubal and Skenes following Webb in the rotation, combined with the incorporation of younger pitchers such as McLean and Miller, Team USA aims to maintain strong pitching depth through the initial pool-play rounds. The management of workloads under strict tournament rules is critical, especially as pitchers prepare for their MLB seasons.
