Taijuan Walker’s Spring Prep Sparks Phillies & Mexico Hype

Taijuan Walker, the Phillies’ right-handed pitcher, delivered a solid spring outing on Tuesday, throwing 49 pitches across 2⅔ innings while pitching for Team Mexico against the Arizona Diamondbacks. As the most seasoned starter on Mexico’s World Baseball Classic roster, he impressed with a prior four-inning, eight-strikeout scoreless effort versus Great Britain, positioning himself for a possible matchup against Team USA this Sunday featuring Phillies teammates Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber.

Walker’s upcoming start is scheduled for either Saturday against Brazil or Sunday against the United States, with Team USA expected to start Paul Skenes in the game against Mexico. Walker’s spring preparations are closely watched given his significant role both for Mexico and the Phillies.

Early Signs of Rhythm and Focus during Grapefruit League Debut

Walker began his 2026 preseason on a promising note last Thursday during the Grapefruit League game against the Nationals in Clearwater. Over two innings, he threw 29 pitches without deploying his splitter or cutter, concentrating instead on refining his slider and curveball. Prioritizing his breaking pitches over pure results, he felt confident with the outcome.

“Been trying to work on it, it felt really good today, the shapes were really good. Swings and misses and weak contact with it,”

Walker said, reflecting on his slider after the outing.

In addition to his pitching, Walker’s quick pick-off move remains a notable strength. Known for having possibly the fastest footwork among right-handed pitchers when tagging first base, Walker’s pick-off numbers stand impressively high. Among active right-handers, he is second with 31 career pick-offs, surpassed only by Justin Verlander, who has more than 22.

Changes in Offseason Training and Preparation

This offseason marked a departure from the previous year for Walker, who entered fresh after a steady 2025 season rather than recovering from a career-worst campaign. Having spent much of last year alternating between starting and relieving roles, he felt revitalized and physically stronger as spring began.

“I felt like I was getting stronger, my velo was creeping back up more consistently to 93, 94 toward the end of the year,”

Walker explained.

“I’m used to throwing 150-plus innings before 2024.”

Now 33 and approaching his 34th birthday in August, maintaining his athleticism became a priority. His offseason routine shifted away from heavy strength training toward Pilates, mobility exercises, and explosive, fast-twitch workouts to preserve flexibility and quickness.

“I stayed away from strength training, I did more pilates, mobility work and more explosive work, jumps and trying to be fast-twitch,”

Walker said.

“Getting older, body’s getting tighter and you lose that whippiness and mobility, so I just wanted to make sure my hips were good. Something new I wanted to try and so far, my body’s feeling really good.”

Defined Role in Phillies’ Rotation Amid Health Considerations

Walker is set to start the season in the Phillies’ rotation, occupying either the fourth or fifth spot, with the lineup order between him and Andrew Painter still undetermined. The Phillies’ rotation could shift once Zack Wheeler returns from injury, as he is progressing through bullpen sessions and could rejoin the team by mid-to-late April.

Wheeler expressed readiness, stating,

“If I’m ready to go, I’m ready to go.”

When the rotation is at full strength, the Phillies may consider several options: adopting a six-man rotation, sending Painter to Triple A to maintain consistent starts, or moving Walker back into the bullpen. However, implementing a six-man rotation early in the season may not be ideal due to multiple scheduled days off within the team’s first 30 games.

Impact of Walker’s Spring Preparations on Season Outlook

Taijuan Walker’s effective spring outings for both Team Mexico and the Phillies highlight his growing importance to both squads. His refined pitch arsenal, athletic maintenance, and quick footwork add value to his role as a versatile starter. His experiences at the World Baseball Classic can only serve to sharpen his competitive edge as the Phillies prepare for a challenging season ahead.

How the Phillies manage their rotation around Walker, especially with Wheeler’s return uncertain, will influence their pitching depth and overall strength. Walker’s ability to maintain form and health this spring reinforces optimism about a successful campaign, while his World Baseball Classic exposure offers valuable high-level competition experience before the regular season begins.
