The Cincinnati Reds signed left-handed pitcher Caleb Ferguson to a one-year contract in December to strengthen their bullpen ahead of the new season. As a native of the Columbus area, Ferguson brings local roots to the team along with a notable postseason track record that Reds supporters will find encouraging.
Ferguson shared with MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon,
“I’m going into my eighth season now. I’ve been in the playoffs every year of my career,”
adding,
“I kind of like to joke with guys, ‘Hey, we’re not going to end the streak here. It’s not going to stop now.’”
This continuation of postseason experience fits the Reds’ ambition to improve their relief pitching.
Proven Playoff Experience Across Multiple Teams
Throughout his career, Ferguson has appeared in the playoffs with several teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros, and Seattle Mariners. In 2025, he split his season between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Mariners, delivering solid performance metrics over a career-high 70 games. His season stats featured a 5-4 win-loss record, a 3.58 ERA, a 2.32 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and a 1.16 WHIP.
Reflecting on his recent season, Ferguson stated,
“Last year was probably the best year I had in my career.”
Enhancing the Reds’ Left-Handed Relief Options
The Cincinnati Reds recognized the pressing need for dependable left-handed relievers to balance their bullpen. Besides Ferguson, they acquired left-hander Brock Burke, who brings additional expertise to the pitching staff. Sam Moll remains in contention for one of the remaining bullpen roles, offering another valuable lefty option.
Nick Krall, Reds President of Baseball Operations, highlighted this strategic addition, saying,
“(Burke) is a quality lefty reliever to add to the bullpen,”
and noted,
“Having two veteran guys in he and Caleb Ferguson and a third lefty in Sam Moll, who ended the year not where we wanted him to be but he has a chance to come in and have a third lefty to your bullpen, is a nice thing to have.”
Outlook for the Reds’ Relief Pitching Staff
By bringing Ferguson into the fold, the Reds hope to inject veteran postseason experience and steady left-handed pitching into a bullpen that has struggled at times. The combination of Ferguson’s consistency and Burke’s addition creates a promising forearm duo for late-inning situations. Sam Moll’s competition for a bullpen spot also adds depth and potential growth to the team’s relief corps.
The success of these moves will be crucial as the Reds aim to contend in a highly competitive league, and Ferguson’s personal streak of postseason appearances serves as a hopeful sign for Cincinnati’s pitching outlook this year.
