The Detroit Tigers are preparing for the 2026 season after a challenging end to 2025, when they lost a significant lead in the American League Central and were eliminated by the Seattle Mariners in the division series. Amid this backdrop, left-hander Tarik Skubal, the reigning AL Cy Young winner, returned to Tigers camp following his start for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) against Great Britain on Saturday night. Despite some criticism about his decision to rejoin spring training shortly after the WBC, Tigers manager AJ Hinch publicly defended Skubal’s choice.
He was in a really hard spot to try to please everybody in a world where criticism is easy,
Hinch said.
He should take no criticism because I think he did something incredible to be a part of it in the first place.
The Challenges Behind Skubal’s Decision
Skubal’s situation was complicated, as he had to weigh competing priorities between representing Team USA in the WBC and preparing for a full Major League Baseball season aiming for a World Series run with the Tigers. Participating in the WBC carries an inherent injury risk, especially since pitchers are expected to perform at peak levels during the tournament, whereas spring training is traditionally a period for gradually building endurance and strength.
By returning to camp promptly, Skubal is focusing on positioning himself for a successful regular season. With back-to-back strong Cy Young campaigns, the 29-year-old left-hander remains a linchpin for the Tigers’ pitching staff in an American League Central division considered relatively weak this year. Last season, Skubal secured 13 wins, maintained a 2.21 ERA, earned 6.5 Wins Above Replacement (WAR), pitched 195⅓ innings over 31 starts, struck out 241 batters, and held a WHIP of 0.891.
Team USA’s Path Forward in the WBC
Team USA, with Skubal’s recent contribution, faces Italy Tuesday night as they aim to reach the quarterfinals, set to begin on Friday. The United States seeks to reclaim the championship after falling to Team Japan in the 2023 WBC final. Skubal’s involvement in the tournament highlights his dual commitment to both international competition and his professional responsibilities with Detroit.
