Karl Rasmussen of Sports Illustrated pointed out the challenges the Red Sox face without a clear third base contender.
“The loss of Alex Bregman leaves the Red Sox without a clear answer at third base. Marcelo Mayer and Caleb Durbin are expected to get reps at the hot corner, but the team’s failure to retain Bregman was a big loss, both offensively and defensively,”
Rasmussen wrote.
Defensively, the Red Sox now rely on two less experienced players rather than a proven Gold Glove winner, increasing the risk of mistakes. Offensively, however, the duo may hold their own. Caleb Durbin, who batted .256/.334/.387 last year with 11 home runs, 53 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases, is likely to benefit from batting right-handed at Fenway Park, known for being hitter-friendly.
Despite struggles during the previous season, Mayer’s early Spring Training numbers show improvement. In five games, he recorded a .231/.375/.462 slash line with a home run, suggesting potential even though his batting average remains below expectations.
