South African cricketer Quinton de Kock praised India’s Varun Chakaravarthy as a “very good bowler” ahead of their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8s match on Sunday in Ahmedabad. De Kock pointed to Chakaravarthy’s consistent performances to warn of the challenge the spinner poses to the South African batting line-up.
Strong IPL and International Records Raise Stakes
During the 2025 Indian Premier League season, de Kock and Chakaravarthy were teammates at Kolkata Knight Riders, where the spinner claimed 17 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 22.53. This performance placed him ninth among the highest wicket-takers that season. Currently ranked as the top T20I bowler globally, Chakaravarthy also made significant impacts in India’s recent T20I series against South Africa.
Chakaravarthy’s Impact in Recent T20I Series Against South Africa
Chakaravarthy took 10 wickets in four innings during the December 2025 five-match T20I series held in India, averaging only 11.20 runs per wicket. His efforts helped India secure a 3-1 series win, despite one game being abandoned due to rain. These figures further underline the spinner’s effectiveness, especially against South Africa’s batting line-up.
De Kock’s Perspective on Facing Chakaravarthy Again
At the pre-match press conference, de Kock acknowledged the difficulty in confronting such an in-form bowler. He emphasized that although South Africa’s batsmen have analyzed Chakaravarthy’s style and strategized accordingly, they must ultimately rely on their own skills and instincts to succeed against him.
De Kock remarked:
I think everyone has their way about going about it. I think just at the end of the day our guys just have to stick to their own strengths and use their instincts at the right time. I think that’s it. He’s a good bowler, a very good bowler at the moment. And obviously he bowled really well against us in the series, like two months ago. Hopefully the guys have, after that series, just had a little bit more time to have a look at him, speak about how they’re going to play against him. So hopefully with their plans it comes off and if it doesn’t there’s a reason why it’s probably the number one T20 spinner in the world. So we’ll have to see what we can do,

Implications for Sunday’s T20 World Cup Encounter
With Varun Chakaravarthy’s form and statistics placing him among the most formidable spin bowlers currently, the upcoming T20 World Cup match in Ahmedabad carries significant weight. South Africa’s batsmen will be tested against a spinner who has recently dominated their lineup. How well the South African team adapts and exploits their strengths will play a crucial role in the outcome.
