Rashid Khan Captaincy Change Looms After T20 WC Exit

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) is evaluating changes within the national cricket team after Afghanistan’s elimination in the group stage of the T20 World Cup 2026. This decision comes shortly after appointing Richard Pybus as the new head coach, replacing Jonathan Trott, and bringing on Toby Radford as the batting coach. Rashid Khan currently leads the team as captain, but ACB officials, including chief executive Naseeb Khan, have indicated that a captaincy review is possible as part of broader team reforms.

Officials Highlight Potential Changes and Coaching Updates

Naseeb Khan confirmed ongoing considerations for reshaping the squad.

“We are currently considering reforms within the team,”

he stated. He emphasized that changes are a natural part of building for future success, noting,

“We have already changed the head coach, batting coach, and trainer, and similar adjustments will also be made within the team.”

However, he clarified that no final decision has been made regarding Rashid Khan’s captaincy at this point.

Challenges Under Rashid Khan’s Leadership and Future Plans

Despite Rashid Khan’s leadership, Afghanistan failed to advance beyond the group stage for the second consecutive T20 World Cup. Chief executive Naseeb Khan also outlined plans for head coach Richard Pybus to officially join the team after a scheduled series against Sri Lanka, as they begin preparations for the 2027 and 2028 World Cups.

“After the Sri Lanka series, he (Pybus) will come to Afghanistan. We are planning to introduce a new management team for the HPC,”

Naseeb said.

Domestic Talent and International Ambitions Amid Regional Uncertainty

Naseeb stressed the importance of nurturing Afghanistan’s domestic cricket talent alongside their international campaigns:

“We want to start preparations now for the 2027 and 2028 World Cups and also bring Afghanistan’s domestic talent to the international stage.”

However, the forthcoming Sri Lanka series faces uncertainty due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which may affect travel and logistics.

“Yes, I am in Dubai for this purpose to finalise the logistics and other preparations for the series. If the situation normalises, we will definitely proceed with it,”

Naseeb added, underscoring the tentative nature of upcoming fixtures.

Looking Ahead: Uncertain Leadership and Team Strategy

The Afghanistan Cricket Board’s potential changes, including the possible captaincy shakeup involving Rashid Khan, reflect a broader effort to revitalize the team following disappointing World Cup results. With new coaching staff and a focus on integrating emerging players, Afghanistan is positioning itself for stronger performances in future international tournaments. The outcome of these reforms and the resolution of regional conflicts will likely shape the team’s direction over the next few years.
