CF Montréal Player Transfer Shakes Up Red Bulls Roster

Red Bull New York has secured defender Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty in a swap deal with CF Montréal, exchanging him for midfielder Wiki Carmona, the club announced today. Montréal will cover part of Marshall-Rutty’s salary for the 2026 season, while New York will hold a share of the sell-on rights for Carmona. This transaction brings a fresh dynamic to both teams as they prepare for the upcoming season.

New York’s Perspective on Adding Marshall-Rutty

Julian de Guzman, Head of Sport for the Red Bulls, expressed enthusiasm about the addition of Marshall-Rutty.

“We are very pleased to add Jahkeele to our roster and welcome him to the club,”

de Guzman said.

“He is an exciting young player that brings a strong mentality and a willingness to work, and we believe this is a great spot for him to continue developing and taking the next step in his career.”

Marshall-Rutty’s Professional Background and Recent Performance

At 21 years old, Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty brings six MLS seasons of experience. He appeared six times for CF Montréal in the last season before completing a loan spell with Charlotte FC, where he played in 29 matches and contributed four assists across all competitions. Marshall-Rutty, who joined Montréal in August 2024, totaled 10 appearances during that period.

Before his time at Montréal, Marshall-Rutty spent four and a half seasons with Toronto FC. Signing his first professional contract with Toronto in January 2020, he was the youngest player in club history to do so at just 15 years old. He made his MLS debut on October 24, 2020, setting another club record as the youngest player to play in a match. Over his tenure at Toronto FC, Marshall-Rutty amassed 83 appearances, scoring one goal and making 10 assists.

International Experience and Canadian Roots

Marshall-Rutty, a native of Brampton, Ontario, has appeared once for Canada’s Senior National Team. He debuted as a substitute on January 17, 2026, helping Canada to a 1-0 victory over Guatemala. Earlier in his career, he was called up to his first senior national team camp in September, marking a significant step in his international career.

Red Bulls Express Gratitude for Wiki Carmona

Regarding Carmona’s departure, de Guzman shared,

“We want to thank Wiki for everything he brought to this club, both on and off the field. He represented the club the right way every day, and we want to wish him the best in this next step of his career.”

Wiki Carmona’s Contributions to Red Bulls and International Play

At 22 years old, Carmona has been with Red Bull New York since the start of the 2021 MLS season. He has made 102 MLS appearances, contributing five goals and seven assists. A key part of the team, Carmona helped the Red Bulls secure their first-ever MLS Eastern Conference Championship in 2024, featuring in 24 matches and recording three goals with three assists that season.

On the international stage, Carmona has played for Venezuela’s national teams at both senior and youth levels. The Guarico native made his senior team debut during a friendly against Argentina on October 9, 2025. He also represented Venezuela’s U-23 squad during the Olympic qualifying campaign in October 2023, underscoring his steady development as an international player.

Implications of the Transfer for Both Clubs

This exchange between CF Montréal and Red Bull New York reflects a strategic reshuffling of talents as each club aims to build for the future. Montreal counters the departure of Marshall-Rutty with the acquisition of a promising midfielder in Carmona, while New York strengthens its defensive options with a versatile young defender. Both players bring experience and ambition, signaling potential growth and renewed energy for their new teams in the coming MLS seasons.
