The San Jose Earthquakes officially announced the signing of Jonathan González on Friday, strengthening their midfield roster ahead of the new season. The 26-year-old Mexican international has committed through 2026, with club options extending to June 2027 and the 2027-28 season. González arrives as a free agent following his tenure with FC Juárez in Liga MX.
A Seasoned Player with Liga MX and International Experience
González, a California native, has participated in 190 first-team matches across all competitions, accumulating two goals and two assists. His career highlights include a significant spell at Liga MX powerhouse CF Monterrey, with additional loan periods including Minnesota United FC. Initially representing the United States extensively at youth international levels, González switched allegiance to Mexico in 2018, earning three caps with El Tri.
Leadership Endorsed by San Jose’s Sporting Director
Bruce Arena, the Earthquakes’ sporting director and head coach, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition:
“We’re pleased to sign Jonathan González,”
he stated.
“Jonathan is a seasoned veteran with experience in LIGA MX and at the international level who adds depth to our midfield.”
Joining the Team at Home with High Expectations
Expressing excitement about the move, González said,
“I’m excited to come back home to the Bay Area and play for the Earthquakes. We had a strong preseason, and I’m looking forward to being a part of the team in 2026.”
His return marks a significant homecoming for the Bay Area native.
San Jose’s Upcoming Season Opener
