Sporting KC Signs Defender Ethan Bartlow in Surprise Move

Sporting Kansas City announced the signing of 26-year-old defender Ethan Bartlow as a free agent, securing him on a one-year contract through the 2026 MLS season with additional club options extending through June 2027 and the 2027-2028 season. Bartlow joined the club after impressing during preseason trials, bringing valuable MLS experience to Sporting KC’s backline.

Professional Experience with Houston Dynamo

Bartlow began his professional career after being selected sixth overall in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft by the Houston Dynamo on a Generation adidas contract. Despite missing most of his rookie year due to injury, he made his Houston debut on April 2, 2022, in a 3-1 win against Inter Miami. Over five seasons with the Dynamo, Bartlow accumulated 96 appearances across all competitions, including 80 in MLS regular-season matches, where he contributed three assists as a central defender.

Growth and Achievements with Houston

After appearing in 17 games during the 2022 season, Bartlow established himself as a regular starter in 2023, playing 32 matches across all competitions. He played a significant role in Houston’s campaign to secure their second Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title, participating in five of six matches before missing the final due to injury. Bartlow also helped lead the Dynamo back to the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2017. In 2024 and 2025, he appeared in 47 more matches for Houston, contributing to another postseason appearance in 2024.
