Bouanga’s Arrival and Immediate Impact at LAFC
Joining LAFC on August 5, 2022, as a Designated Player, Denis Bouanga arrived from AS St. Etienne after three seasons in Ligue 1 where he tallied 26 goals and 13 assists. He quickly became a marquee figure for LAFC, famously scoring a stoppage-time winner in Portland that clinched the 2022 Supporters’ Shield. His contributions continued as he netted two goals in the 2022 MLS Cup Playoffs, playing a pivotal role in securing LAFC’s MLS Cup victory that year.
Bouanga Expresses Gratitude and Commitment to LAFC
Bouanga shared his appreciation for the club and its community:
“I’m grateful to LAFC for the trust they’ve shown in me. From the beginning, my family and I have felt at home in Los Angeles. It’s an honor to represent this club and our supporters every time I put on the jersey. I believe in what we are building here, and I’m motivated to keep improving, winning more trophies, and helping this club reach even higher.”
Historic 2023 Season: Bouanga’s Rise Among MLS Elite
In his first full season, Bouanga delivered one of LAFC’s most dominant individual campaigns, rising to MLS elite status. He finished as an MLS Most Valuable Player finalist and earned his first MLS All-Star nod. Remarkably, he secured the 2023 MLS Golden Boot after scoring 20 goals and adding seven assists in 31 regular season games. This achievement made him the third player in LAFC history to win the league’s scoring title, alongside Carlos Vela and Diego Rossi.

Outstanding Performance Across All Competitions in 2023
Bouanga appeared 48 times in all tournaments during 2023, matching a club record with 38 goals scored, tying Carlos Vela’s 2019 total. Along with 14 assists, Bouanga’s scoring prowess featured hat tricks in MLS, the Concacaf Champions League, and the Leagues Cup. His six goals in the Leagues Cup placed him third in the tournament, earning spots on both the Concacaf Champions League Best XI and the MLS Best XI, underscoring his transformative influence at the club.
Continued Excellence in 2024 Season
In 2024, Bouanga maintained his high level of play, making 32 regular-season appearances with 30 starts, delivering 20 goals and 11 assists in 2,755 minutes on the field. He was honored as an MLS All-Star for the second consecutive year and named again to the MLS Best XI. Finishing as a co-runner-up for the Golden Boot, Bouanga also became just the third LAFC player to reach 40 or more career regular-season goals. His impact persisted in Leagues Cup competition, where he recorded six goals and three assists over seven matches and led the tournament in total shots.
Bouanga Sets New Club Records in 2025 Season
This past season marked significant milestones for Bouanga as he became LAFC’s all-time leading goal scorer with 94 goals in 144 appearances, surpassing Carlos Vela’s previous record of 93 goals in 186 games. His 24 goals during the 2025 regular season placed him among only two players in club history to score at least 10 goals for three straight seasons. Notably, Bouanga was the first in MLS history to tally 20 or more goals in three consecutive seasons. He received his third consecutive MLS All-Star selection, MLS Best XI honors, and finished as a finalist for the Landon Donovan MLS MVP award. Overall, he has tallied 105 goals and 43 assists in 155 appearances across all competitions for LAFC.
Dynamic Partnership with Son Heung-Min Fuels LAFC Attack
Following the addition of superstar forward Son Heung-Min, the pair quickly developed into one of soccer’s deadliest attacking duos. Together, they combined for 25 goals and eight assists, including playoff matches. Between late August and early October, they scored 18 consecutive goals for LAFC, setting a new MLS record for most consecutive goals by two teammates. This partnership helped LAFC become the first MLS club with a player to record hat tricks in three straight games.
Bouanga’s Role and Achievements with Gabon National Team
Denis Bouanga’s international career began in January 2017 with Gabon. He scored his first goal for the national team in a friendly against Guinea on March 24, 2017. Since then, he has appeared 53 times, starting 52 games and scoring 17 goals. One of his standout performances came with a hat trick in a 4-0 win over Seychelles during a World Cup qualifying match on September 3, 2025.
