Jonathan Bamba scored the opening goal in the first half, leading the Chicago Fire to a convincing 3-0 win over CF Montreal at Soldier Field on Saturday. This victory highlighted Chicago Fire’s dominance in their home opener and showcased their strong control throughout the match despite facing a late-game setback.
Fire Maintain Pressure and Overcome a Player Disadvantage
The Fire (1-1) took an early lead with Bamba’s well-placed finish from inside the box in the 27th minute, carrying a 1-0 advantage into halftime. Even after Jonathan Dean received a red card in the 56th minute, leaving Chicago a man down for the final 34 minutes, they continued to apply pressure and limit Montreal’s offensive chances. Throughout the game, Chicago finished with a significant edge in attacking statistics, outshooting Montreal 18-4 and producing 11 shots on target compared to Montreal’s 2.
Late Goals Clinch a Convincing Shutout
The match was sealed in stoppage time as Hugo Cuypers converted a penalty in the 90th minute to extend the lead to 2-0. Immediately after, Robin Lod added a third goal with a close-range finish. Chicago goalkeeper Chris Brady preserved the clean sheet with two saves, while Montreal’s Thomas Gillier made seven saves, keeping the visitors competitive despite the broad score margin.
Extending Unbeaten Run and Looking Ahead
This win not only marked Chicago Fire’s first victory of the season after a 2-1 loss in Houston but also extended their unbeaten streak against Canadian teams to six matches dating back to 2024. The Fire remain optimistic as they prepare to face Columbus next Saturday, while Montreal will look to rebound in their upcoming match against New York on March 8.
