Toronto FC has had a difficult beginning to the 2026 MLS season, yet the team’s head coach, Robin Fraser, firmly defended goalkeeper Luka Gavran following a 3-0 loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday at BC Place. Fraser emphasized that Gavran remains a key part of the club’s long-term vision despite the winless start.
A Challenging Start for Gavran as Starting Goalkeeper
Taking over as Toronto FC’s primary goalkeeper after the departure of former MLS Cup champion Sean Johnson, 25-year-old Luka Gavran has faced a steep learning curve. The Hamilton native has allowed six goals in his initial two league matches, conceding three against both the Whitecaps and FC Dallas. Despite these setbacks, Gavran recorded four saves against Vancouver and five the previous week, often under intense pressure due to defensive lapses.
Fraser Highlights Gavran’s Strengths and Potential
Robin Fraser spoke highly of Gavran’s abilities, highlighting the goalkeeper’s outstanding shot-stopping skills and physical presence. Standing at 6-foot-6, Gavran’s reach and reflexes provide significant advantages, allowing him to make saves that many others might not. Fraser acknowledged that while Gavran’s in-game decision-making needs refinement, this growth is typical for young goalkeepers adapting to the demands of MLS.
The thing about Luka is he’s an incredible shot-stopper,
Fraser said post-match.
His reflexes are incredible, he’s so big that he’s able to get to things really quickly that a lot of other goalkeepers wouldn’t.

A lot of what he has to get up to speed very quickly is week-to-week in-game decisions,
Fraser explained.
It’s pretty normal that you’ll see a few mistakes from a young goalkeeper early.
From Relief Keeper to No. 1 Role
Before this season, Gavran had limited experience as Toronto’s starting goalkeeper, mainly appearing in cup matches and filling in during injuries. In 2024, he stepped in for Johnson nine times due to injury. Now, with the starting role firmly in his hands, Gavran is set to develop alongside a team that is steadily reshaping its identity amid roster changes.
Encouragement and Development Focus for Gavran
Fraser stressed the importance of patience as Gavran adjusts to the pressures of being Toronto FC’s first-choice keeper. The coaching staff aims to support his growth by addressing areas that require improvement without undermining the qualities that earned him the spot.
We know that Luka has an incredible future ahead of him, and certainly it’s the process that we and he undergo to get to that point is the important thing. For us, it’s continue to encourage him in the areas that we feel he needs growth in, but certainly to appreciate the things that he does really well.
Upcoming Matches Offer Opportunity to Rebound
Toronto FC’s next test comes on the road against Cincinnati on Sunday, followed by their home opener on March 14 against Red Bull New York, led by Michael Bradley. These matches provide Gavran and the team with chances to stabilize performance and pursue their first victory of the MLS season.
