Daniel Suarez made his first competitive appearance with Spire Motorsports at Bowman Gray Stadium during an exhibition race, starting from the 20th position. He was the last driver to qualify for the main event but managed to navigate through the field and finish in fourth place despite encountering car handling difficulties early on. This debut underscored his determination and adaptability at the challenging short track.
Overcoming Early Car Challenges and Tire Strategy
Throughout the initial laps, Suarez struggled with balance issues, noting that his #7 Chevrolet felt tight. Nevertheless, he steadily progressed to 16th place by lap 50. Following a restart from 11th place on wet-weather tires, Suarez capitalized on improved grip and advanced aggressively through the pack, highlighting his ability to adjust strategy under changing conditions.
Persistent Racing Against Former Teammates and Rivals
The Mexican driver maintained relentless pressure on all competitors, treating everyone equally on track, including ex-teammate Shane van Gisbergen. On lap 164, Suarez displayed considerable racecraft by following Chase Briscoe through Turn 4 and overtaking van Gisbergen to secure third place in the event. This maneuver demonstrated his competitive mindset and refusal to relent.
Mid-Race Incident with Bubba Wallace
At the halfway mark of the 200-lap main event, Suarez became involved in a notable incident with Bubba Wallace. Under caution, Suarez made contact with the rear bumper of Wallace’s car, prompting Wallace to steer Suarez into the grass while the caution flag was still waving. Following this, tensions flared as both drivers exchanged middle fingers, marking a heated moment amid the race’s intensity.

Suarez’s Enthusiasm for Bowman Gray Despite Tough Moments
After the race, Suarez expressed his fondness for Bowman Gray Stadium, emphasizing its unique atmosphere and legacy. He acknowledged the track’s small size relative to the cars but appreciated the energy driven by the passionate fanbase.
“I love it. I think it’s great. I mean, honestly, it’s a very small track for these cars. I wish it were more,”
Suarez said.
“It’s about the history, right? About the history of the place, the fans. It’s not just about what we drivers like to do, right? If you ask me, I prefer a bigger track, but the atmosphere here with the fans and the energy is very… It’s hard to match,”
he added.
“And that’s what makes this place very special. So, I wouldn’t mind coming back again. I think today was a lot of fun, especially because the second half of the race was completely different with the rain. So, I enjoyed that part a lot,”
Suarez concluded.
Responding to Race Incidents and Future Intentions
When addressing his on-track encounters, including the clash with Wallace, Suarez clarified that his frustrations were directed toward other circumstances rather than Wallace personally. He stated that the misunderstanding with Wallace would not extend beyond the race itself. Regarding his competitive style, Suarez said he races opponents with the same intensity they exhibit toward him, regardless of previous relationships or team affiliations.
Daniel Suarez, who finished fourth tonight, says of the run-ins he had with others that he races the way he is raced. Says the situation with Bubba was a misunderstanding and that he wasn’t pleased with some things SVG did on the track but they’ll move on without talking.
